Swedish islands

My husband and I have talked about visiting some of the Swedish islands this summer. There are so many small islands and I have never visited any of them. When I travel I often visit big cities because I like to visit museums and other culturel sights, but it could be interesting to try something different this summer.
I think that a small island would be a nice place to relax for a while. We could buy a group tour or travel by train and arrange our own transportation when we get there. We haven't planned anything yet, but we have been looking at some of the options.
What would you prefer? A city with lots of cultural sights or a beautiful, peaceful place? Why?

We usually travel independently, because we have more freedom that way. I have been on a few group tours, but it is nice to be able to make our own decisions, and dealing with people in a group isn't always nice like you said. Today we don't have to sail to get to Sweden, there are train connections from Copenhagen (through the tunnel)

@LadyDuck I met one of my friends on a group tour. We are still friends today, but there are also bad things about group tours. We have to follow the group and I missed making my own decisions. Some of the group members weren't nice. They were more interested in getting drunk than sightseeing.

@Porcospino We also preferred to travel independent. We did once with a group, they are not punctual when you have to live, you must follow the group even what they are doing is not interesting. It's not for us.

Some of the small Danish islands are very peaceful. My husband and I once visited an islands with 5 inhabitants. There were no cars on the island, and I enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere.

Which one do you want to go to? I'd like to visit both Åland and Gotland. Possibly also Öland but I think Åland and Gotland sounds more interesting.
I've been to some of the smaller islands in the Finnish part of skärgården, if I go to Åland I could go with my Finnish friend and take a ship from Helsinki.

We are not sure yet. We read about some of the places online, but it is not easy to decide. I have only been to Stockholm, Malmo and Ystad, so there are a lot of places that I haven't visited yet. We are probably going to go by train from Copenhagen. There are group tours as well, but we often like to travel independently.

@Porcospino I've mainly been to Stockholm and Åre in Sweden, I've seen so much more of Finland than Sweden or Norway. Some day I'd like to drive up through northern Sweden and Finland to Northern Norway, preferrably in the summer or autumn. Just have to find the time, as it's a long drive.

@Torunn My husband and I have talked about doing the same thing one day. I have never been to the northern part of Sweden or Norway, and in Finland I have only been to Helsinki. But I know that we would need a lot of time for such a long drive - and a better car as well. In September I am going to visit Oslo. We are going to sail from Copenhagen to Oslo and we will spend some time in Oslo before we sail back.

@TiarasOceanView I am excited about this trip. Sweden is very close to Denmark, but I don't know much about the country. I have only visited a few places there.

I live pretty close to beach. I love to spend there in the summer months. The water is usually cold here (even in the middle of the summer) but it is still nice to spend time on the beach. Sometimes we drink coffee there or bring our food.

@nela13 Even when the weather is warm, the water is cold. We usually feel cold after swimming for a short time, and we run back to get our towels really fast

Somehow, every year during the summer period, we always travel south. I never paid attention to how many Sweden has islands. I like your idea, change a little. I like city, cultural sight, I'm not a person beach-hotel-beach-hotel. I like to go around the place, to learn something if it's possible. Our vacation is always active.

That sounds like me. Most of my vacations have been really active. I always want to see as much as possible, so I try to visit many different places during my vacation especially cultural places. I always read about the sights before I go in order to pick the most important places. I love to learn new things and get to know a new area. Yes, this year it could be interesting to try something different. That would be a nice experience.

@LowRiderX Northern Europe is generally expensive. I haven't spent much time in Sweden and Norway, but I think that the prices aren't that different from the prices in Denmark. Some of the tourists who visit Denmark are shocked when they see the prices here. Some of them think that they have been scammed, but it isn't a scam, the Danes pay the same amounts. Our salaries are high compared to many other countries, but the cost of living is also high.
I didn't know that Montenegro was more expensive than Greece. I have never been there. I want to go back to Greece one day.

@Porcospino I was looking for some destinations in the north. But the north is always expensive
How is this possible and why? No logic at all. Greece (for example) raises prices during the summer season, but not so much that we can not afford it. I believe Sweden is expensive due to the standard. It's certainly bigger standard than in Greece. Montenegro is also more expensive than Greece. Ohhh...It can be because it's big, there are plenty of places, islands and they need a lot of tourists. Some small fishing towns, literally headed for a year, live on that money they take during the summer season.

I kind of like the countryside more than the cities when I travel. I like to see beautiful nature, but I don't mind cities too. Maybe it's because I live in a larger city, that I get the metropolitan areas all confused - they all seem the same to me. lol.

I live in a village. There is no beach here, but the beach isn't far away. We only have to drive 10 minutes to get to the beach. That is one of my favorite places during the summer. Do you visit the beaches in your country or abroad?

@cherigucchi It sounds like a great way to spend time together as a family. We never did that when I was a child, because my father didn't like to spend time on the beach. We usually visited other places.

I think I would want just a little bit of both. I'd want to be near enough a city to enjoy it, but I'd prefer to stay in a village on the outskirts of a city.

That sounds good to me. A bit of both would be perfect. I would like to spend some time on some of the islands and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, but it is also nice to be close to a city. If we choose Göteborg (Gothenburg) we would be able to do both.

@Porcospino When I go on trips, I seek out the nature around me, but I like the cities as well. You can find old buildings that stand amongst their newer counterparts. There is an old church in my city, I don't know how old but it's atleast late 1800's. It stands so proudly across from a building made of all glass. There are little influences to be found through my city. An old shell gas station still in the shape of the shell, a tea pot that stood in Old Salem... I like to seek those type things out in every city.
We went to the beach one time and across the street from the beach was an old church like the one in my city. It looked out of place amongst the touristy shops.

@ScribbledAdNauseum It is interesting to see old buildings between new parts of the city. In the city where I used to live there was on old gas station. It looked like it had been abandoned. Some of the old signs were still there. I think I took some pictures of it, but I don't have them anymore. I loved the way it looked. In Danish we call it "tidslomme" (= an old place that still looks the way it did in past even though other places have changed) I don't know if there is an English word for that.

I read that there are thousands of small islands in Sweden. Many of them are uninhabited, and I think that you need to your own boat to visit some of them.

That sounds very nice to get away to a small island and just have time to relax and enjoy your surroundings, that is what I would chose to just get away from everything.
