Man it hurts

Our pets rely on us to take care of them. Not just food and water, but security as well. We are supposed to help them make sense of our world that they live in.We need to keep them from pain. We need to not let them feel lost.
Princess has cancer--no treatment, no surgery will fix it. She has gone downhill rapidly in the last two weeks. Today we will do our final kindness and have her put to sleep.
She got better for a day or two after her first vet treatment, but then rapidly worse. She cannot see, she cannot chew well, she is skin and bones.
Usually she is Bob's cat, but today she follows me from room to room, inside and out. Clear down the hill to the back shed. She has to know where I am. She speaks plaintively, one syllable at a time, and risks being tripped over or stepped on, just to know where I am. She does not want to be held. I think it hurts.
I have fed her every delicacy we have. I have used a blender to make it smooth.
With great effort she got up on the bed for part of the night to sleep on Bob. After she got down, he could not find her in the night. The vet says that that is what they do when they are dying.
I will not be selfish and keep her, uncomfortable, hungry, restless, confused as she is. If she had been in sharp pain, we would not have taken this last little bit to love on her as we have.
We have had to put others to sleep who were younger than she is, at 16, but they were obviously suffering. I have made homemade cat food for years for kitties with dental problems. I had one sigh and breathe his last as I walked past him to go to work. This hurts the worst of all, I think.
We are suffering along with Princess today. But it is pain that comes from the heart and not from bodily wounds.
I do not know when I will be here to post again. I will try to get back and respond, later.

I remember about Kuma. We will be adding some rocks to Princess' place. I think I will plant some special plants.

Yes, it was very hard, but it was right, and calm, and peaceful for her. The vet explained even more to me about the cancer and how it was pinching the nerves and keeping her from eating and even hearing.

We went together to the vet. I could not have Bob do it all alone.

@GardenGerty That's good that you shared the burden with Bob.

@GardenGerty At least she is out of her pain, and you can get on with grieving until you can start to heal from yours. Even though parting is painful, animal companions make our lives so much richer.

It is always very sad when you have to say goodbye to a much loved pet. They are part of the family. The added guilt if you have to have them put to sleep makes the loss worse because of the guilt we feel even though we know we are doing the best thing for them. Set your pet free and be glad you can do this one last kindness for him. Do it soon. It is the right thing.

We took her yesterday. We had made an appointment so it was not crazy time at the vets and she had time to explain more about the tumor that the kitty had and why she had trouble eating and lost her balance.

She had an awful lot of confusion with the tumor putting pressure on so many of her systems. She had a good appetite, but could not eat. The location of the cancer caused many issues.

She probably had been ill and hiding it for quite a while. The vet was very good to her and to us.

They are so good at hiding things and I know as our dog does it as well.
Hope you are feeling so much better now and its always good when there is a good vet around not one of those harsh ones.

Our beloved Preiti just decided to leave this world. She just collapsed but not before having issues with her hunger about which I have written here. Till the last moment she was walking around and so atleast we know she was not suffering.
Princess lived her life and you will have fond memories of her.

@GardenGerty Preiti was 12. She had a beautiful shining coat, but had lost a lot of weight. Her eating habits were odd and no Vet could tell us why it was that way. Her blood tests did not show anything either and nor did she show signs of weakness except on the last day. .

I'm deeply sorry about your time of sadness. We lost our beloved German Shepherd when I was 16. We loved him and he was our family.

I think that would be very sad and hard for a teenager. I really like German Shepherds.
