Reducing Those Junk Food Cravings

Question: How do you battle those junk food cravings? I have a couple suggestions which I have used to maintain control and stick to a healthy diet. They were also mentioned in this article from Spoon University.
Here they are:
Don't completely deprive yourself of some of your favorite foods. To strict a diet can lead to intense cravings and over eating. Sometimes you need to occasionally treat yourself.
Create an eating schedule. When my diet gets off track I try to set specific meal times. I eat only at these times and not inbetween. That stops mindless snacking when your not really hungry.
So do you have an effective plan to fight the munchies?

Not really..I struggle with this. Part of the problem is having a bit too much of it around I think.

Here is something else you might try that works for me sometimes. Distract yourself from those junk food cravings. Instead of going into the kitchen for a donut cookie or other goodie why not do some posting on My Lot. Out of sight, out of mind, so to speak.

A whole lot of junk food is presented to the consumer each day.
I think the discipline of not being tempted comes with age and the necessity to keep on a healthy diet.
For example, I see young men devour food like they have been starved for the longest time. Fact is, they are just two hours earlier.
It is in their constitution, to eat more, their youthful bodies need it. They exert more energy.
Contrast that to someone of the same age but is afflicted with diabetes, this young lad is consciously aware of the repercussions of eating junk, thus, craving or no craving, he opts not to partake.
Your suggestion is a good starter for everyone used to junk food eating. It is hoped that junk food disappears totally, for the well-being of everyone,

@dgobucks226 Your post is very relevant this time and age to that specie called man. Why people resort to junk food when there are so much nutritious food is a norm problem. Your post suggests ways to begin veering away from junk. That is good. Keep on.

I agree with age comes wisdom about eating properly and maintaining your health. As we age one comes more susceptible to conditions like heart disease and diabetes through continuing to eat poorly. You may get away with it when your a youngster but eventually it will catch up with you.
So true about those with diet related illnesses. Those with them get a reality check to change their ways.
I don't think junk food will ever be eliminated. To much profit in selling them. We must learn to resist them or at least eat them in moderation.

You subscribe to having a set eating schedule. If one sticks to that plan it trains your appetite and eliminates junk food cravings or overeating. Nice suggestion!

Yes, it is always right there when you walk in the stores. I can't resist Tastycake Coffee cakes. My way of dealing with my cravings is to reduce the portion size. This way I satisfy my sweet tooth but in moderation. Lately I have been substituting an apple in the afternoon instead of anything junk food related. I have been able to lose some of my winter weight gain so I need to continue doing this..

I try to make sure that I have handy snacks that are also healthy. I find it helps me to keep a food diary, and I will have the odd treat. There are days I do struggle, whether it's because I don't have control over what is available or whether I'm just finding it difficult. I eat a lot of good foods, and I am usually quite good at keeping my sweet treats within certain limits but without feeling deprived. I follow a Slimming World plan, which is more about knowing what's in your food and finding healthy alternatives rather than 'dieting'. I've lost (and kept off) over 6 stone so it's obviously worked! I do still struggle, though, especially as I can't get to the support groups any more - that was something that really helped me, especially knowing I was going to get weighed and when other people said I had inspired them.
I haven't been great just lately. I've been out for lunch with colleagues today, then I had doughnuts, and I've just eaten junk since I got home. I'll get back on it tomorrow. I'm getting married later this year and already have my wedding dress - that is most definitely a good incentive to stay the same size!

@dgobucks226 it's surprised me just how much of a difference it makes having a food diary.
I don't even like doughnuts that much, it's a bit odd that I've been wanting them!

Thanks so much for sharing your personal experiences. I think you make some really good suggestions. I like the idea of a food diary. I have done that also and find it works! It definitely provides you with discipline to stay on track with eating healthy foods. I also agree that depriving yourself completely of sweets is not the best plan. An occasional sweet as a reward will limit your wanting to binge eat.
P.S. You need to stay away from those tempting donuts, lol. Your wedding dress will thank you, just kidding. Congrats in advance on getting married

Having the willpower to resist those urges goes hand in hand with limiting those binges. Good for you! Studies have shown food cravings decrease when eaten less frequently.

I keep it in the pantry in the basement. If I decide to indulge, I need to put my small portion in a dish, put the rest away and have an apple or carrots to supplement my treat! Sometimes this plan works. Lately I have been indulging far too much.

Portion control is a very good suggestion. That will help with the constant binging. Here is another suggestion that I use. Distract yourself from those junk food cravings. Instead of going into the kitchen for a donut, chips cookie or other goodie why not do some posting on My Lot. Or take a walk. Out of sight, out of mind, so to speak.

I try not to keep it around. i drink lots of water. and I allow myself one cheat meal (meal NOT day) every week or two. the less I have it around the less I crave it and when I do have my cheat meal I don't overdo it. also for times when I'm just bored and want to eat for something to do, i keep trail mix on hand. just having something crunchy helps me

I totally agree with every suggestion you made Bree. Water will keep you feeling full, an occasional sweet reduces binging, and a healthier snack alternative will satisfy those hunger urges. Here's one thing I also will do... I distract myself from those junk food cravings. Instead of going into the kitchen for a donut, chips, cookie or other goodie I so some posting on My Lot or go for a walk. Goodies out of sight, out of mind, so to speak.

In fact, I do not have a plan because I do not even use this food, I'm just not an fan, and that's the only reason. People mostly begin to take care of their diet only when they get sick. Sometimes it happens that I eat, but I really do not care because I do not eat the often.

I see what you getting at... Never eating those junk foods in the first place enables you to develop a very healthy diet. And that is true about people who have eaten poorly changing their diet after developing a life threatening condition. Thanks for your input

Having a day set aside for a minor indulgence is a good way to combat binge eating. A very good suggestion! Fruit is also a healthy sweet alternative to candy and cake. Thanks for your response

My plan to fight the munchies is not to buy junk food. However, I do make myself something to munch on occasionally, and it's always healthy. Then there's the Veggie Straws I ran into not long ago. My problem with them - I can't just eat the required amount. I munch while I work, and soon the bag is either half gone or completely gone. It's not a small bag either. The good thing about Veggie Straws is that they are good for you in a snack kind of way. The highest thing they have is sodium. If I don't buy them often, which I don't. I'm okay with that.
