Fire-eaters and jugglers

When I was approaching adulthood in Australia, it was a big deal for people to go overseas. Certainly young people wouldn’t go traipsing off all over the countryside, backpacking their way here and there. Or at least, no-one I knew did.
But in recent years we’ve hosted quite a few young travellers and met even more. The latest couple have interesting stories, as they all do. Vince met the girl on the plane coming back from Nepal. We gave her a lift to the middle of Perth, Western Australia. Several months later she got in touch and came to stay for a few days while looking for work in the area. Her partner has now joined her but they aren’t staying with us although they’ve spent a weekend here.
He was studying electrical engineering and is from Quebec, Canada. She in Italian but spent four years at university in France. They converse in French although their English is very good. But here is the interesting part: they met at a juggling convention/carnival in the Azores. They both juggle and eat fire and I don’t know what else. I think that’s pretty cool.
The photo is of Julia posing as a hitch-hiker for a story I wanted to write for another site.

You have an interesting life.
Here if you bring someone home with you they will kill you while you sleep.

I agree with you Andria. It would dangerous in the US to bring someone home with you. Especially a backpacker (which in America translates into "homeless person"). I would be very distrustful of bringing anyone inside my home that I don't know.

So they have hot tongues in more ways than one! Did they give you a demo? They sound like a fun couple!

Yikes, it makes me nervous to think of a young girl hitchiking alone..but it's probably a piece of cake after fire eating and juggling!

@changjiangzhibin89 It is. I think they only have to do it for a week then they move on to picking grapes.

Wow, they seem very interesting and well-traveled! It's fun to meet people and hear their stories. I like reading stories from all the different folks here on MyLot, too.

@AliCanary Thanks very much. That's a lovely thing to say. MyLot is really a great community. To me, it's a bit like FB but without the viciousness that you sometimes see on FB. I don't use FB. Occasionally there is a bit of a bubble here but mostly people are kind and tolerant.

@JudyEv - The internet is amazing for bringing people together across the miles. I'm glad I met you, and I enjoy reading your stories.

@Ronrybs There was a YouTube clip of a well-renowned but young violinist playing one of the hardest of the violin repertoire and everyone was just walking past. In a concert hall they probably would have paid hundreds to hear him. I think buskers have to get a licence here which I guess is much the same as auditioning.

A "juggling convention" is a great story in itself... but the fact that they both juggle AND eat fire is going to be a story hard to top!!

Yep, they could always busk if they run out of money.

That looks like one of our country roads.

It's the road from our gate down to the highway. It's only about a kilometre of gravel but it still coats the cars in dust.

We try to be careful about who we befriend. You can't live in fear all your life.

But fire-eating is probably okay. They've taught us a couple of new dice games too.
