I was saddened to read on the News this morning that Brunei a small country North of Borneo has implemented the second phase of Sharia law with punishments that are barbaric and not appropriate as punishment in today's so called enlightened society.
Sharia law means that it would be possible to implement barbaric punishments such as amputating someones right hand and left foot for stealing, Stoning to death women who commit adultery, stoning to death someone who is gay. Public floggings for adultery and execution for people who dare renounce the faith.
A few film stars have called upon the public to boycott luxury hotels owned by the Sultan of Brunei investment company including the Dorchester Hotel London, The Beverley Hills Hotel and Bel Air hotel LA. Hotel Le Meurice Paris, Hotel Eden, Rome. These are just some of the luxury properties they own and manage.
There is no place in today's world for this kind of medieval barbaric practice. I for one would not step into one of these hotels and for that matter Brunei.

I remember very well the Sultan of Brunei who used to spend many weeks a year in Monte Carlo. I remember his Rolls Royce with his Royal emblem painted on the front doors. I remember what he did there that would be severely punished by his own laws.

@hereandthere They often when caught have thousands of pounds in their purses! It is because they can get away with it here and of course won't have their hands chopped off!

Very typical isn't it. Do as I say not as I do. We see lots of this in London with very rich Arabs. Shop lifting and all kinds of things they would never get away with in their own countries. Speeding around the streets of London at night (Impossible during the day when traffic drives around 5-10 MPH).

I read about it this morning. I'm not quite sure I have ever bought or used anything from Brunei, so they probably won't notice the difference. I'll make sure to vote for someone party who's for boycotting them though.
Not that we need to buy their oil anyway (or the other way around), so maybe that won't make a difference either :-/

@garymarsh6 Which mean they won't be buying ours and we won't be buying theirs.
So a boycott wouldn't be very effective.

@gaymarsh6 I concur, and I already boycott such establishments because I can’t afford them. I’ll have to find another way to express my feelings.

@garymarsh6 I think you're right about the boycott, these countries should be punished for having such a barbaric law.

@garymarsh6 it might also mean lesser visitors to brunei, but yes, it will help the world become aware of it

Probably not but to protest at this archaic belief is not a bad thing! I do not think previous boycotts did that much damage but it could hit them hard in the pocket!

That's the easy part. My budget doesn't allow me to even consider staying in such rarified places.
Budget Host and Days Inn (the ones that aren't in pricey locations) are where I'm more likely to lay my head.
