A Light Bulb Moment

A couple of weeks ago I began having difficulties with my bedside lamp. It would come on, sometimes, but would blink out at random moments. I tightened the bulb, but it didn’t solve the problem. Eventually, the light failed to come on at all. I knew our stash of replacement bulbs was in need of resupply so I put bulbs on the shopping list and proceeded to use my husband’s bedside lamp. He was out of town, anyhow, and when he is gone I tend to sleep on his side of the bed so it was not a significant inconvenience. Earlier this week I purchased a multipack of LED bulbs and took the necessary time to unscrew the old bulb and replace it with a new one. I flicked the switch and nothing happened. I must admit I felt a little stupid when looked behind my night table and noticed that the plug was no longer connected to the wall outlet. Almost three weeks without a lamp when there was really nothing wrong with it. Oops.

My light switch is across from my bedroom door. I know this, I've known it for years. I still sometimes reach to the side of the door to flick the light on. My lamp has loose connections. I've tried tightening them but that doesn't seem to help. I think it's going to go down to big trash day this year where someone else can worry about it.

Our bedroom light is also a ceiling fan. Since we often run the fan at night it is not unusual for us to have to pull the chain in the morning to turn the light off. I NEVER remember that and invariably walk over to the light switch (from my dresser, which is only a couple of feet from being directly under the fan) and end up muttering at myself when the switch does nothing.

@SophiaMorros I'd like to have a ceiling fan light in my bedroom as it's the hottest in the house. For the moment I just have two fans in the room, one directly at my feet, the other at my midsection. There are two light switches for the same light in the kitchen. One going towards the living room, the other towards the den. We put tape over the one towards the den for awhile, just to get used to NOT hitting that one.

@ScribbledAdNauseum We sleep in the loft overlooking our great-room. It's the warmest spot in the house. Unfortunately, the ceiling fan is not directly over our bed but blows on our feet. In the winter we actually keep the window open most nights for air circulation. I currently have a window fan blowing out of the window to keep it from getting too hot up there.

I'd be keeping this to myself if I were you! Your family I mean. No-one here will think less of you for this.

@SophiaMorros Won't it be great when you're a grand-mum and his kids give him a little bit of hassle now and then?

They know. My oldest son thought it was pretty funny...but then he thinks pretty much everything I do is pretty funny. I have become an old fuddy-duddy who is spectacularly stupid.

Blame it on Nessie, she probably got back there behind your headboard and unplugged it.

Oops. I hate when I phone our internet provider to ask if they are having problems in our area. They always start by asking something like, "Is your router on?" Annoying, but it is what they encounter all the time, I am sure.

@SophiaMorros that happens here too. But on the Other hand they did once come and check everything out thoroughly when it was our fault. ( a wireless speaker in the bedroom interfered)

@paigea we went through three months of constant problem a couple of years ago. When they installed a neighbours line they cut ours . When they fixed ours they cut two other neighbours. They eventually had to redo our entire neighbourhood...but the never admitted that the problem was their fault not ours.

Our provider doesn't ask us to check our router they just insist that the problem MUST be at our end. I always ask me second son to investigate our internet problems and he is very thorough. When he says our internet is down it is down.

I'm chuckling since the exact same thing happened to me, but more than once. I think I've learned my lesson now.

Our bedrooms have no overhead lights but they do each have a switched receptacle. So often I have forgotten and switched off the light....to come into the room and stumble around to turn the light on,

I felt pretty silly. I really should know to check electrical connections before I assume something needs to be replaced!
