My house was broken into today.

I played with my young neighbor friend at my house this morning before heading off to my visit with the optometrist. When I got home, he revealed to me that he had left his keys in my house, and had to break in to get them. He showed me his method for breaking in, which involved moving a KLH 6 speaker I have refinished to beneath the window by my desk and the climbing over my desk. How dare he! He put the loudspeaker on the cement without moving the rag I had beneath it to keep it for getting scratched. I didn't mind him removing my screen and climbing over my desk, but I scolded him for putting the delicate loudspeaker on raw cement without protecting it. We have started the process of restoring the surface that he (slightly) damaged. Have you had your house broken into lately? What would you have done in this situation?

I had to break into the house once when I left the keys inside . . . but one window in back had no screen and I knew that it could be opened easily (before we fixed it).

@TheHorse Well the break in happened before we fixed it. Now we have a well hidden spare key so there's no need to break in .

I would not have broken in. I would have waited till you got back or phoned you about the situation.

@TheHorse I understand! He was not thinking, he just wanted to get the keys and that's all that was on his mind. How old is he?

I'm only mad because he wasn't as respoonsible toward a delicate woodworking projct as he should have been.

I had actually trained hm how to break into my house if he needed to, so I forgive him. But his insensitivity to our KLH Model 6 vintage loudspeaker surprised me. He has been paid many Hot Wheels cars for his work in our small business.

My last house I owned did. I was in the middle of a divorce and while I was gone taking things to my son's, my ex's brother and his girlfriend went in and stole my jewelry, clothing and other items. I found out it was them through another who told me they were trying to sell it all. I called them up and told them they had two hours before I called the cops. An hour later I heard a noise and looked out seeing them running after leaving a huge bag and box on my steps. I went out to get it and it was someone else's stuff. Not mine. I called. They got arrested but I never got my things back.

Interesting story. Were they ever prosecuted? My lawyer friend told me a story of two girls (two very young women from Mexico) who embezzled $400,000 from an Indian-American merchant who ran a truck-stop where they worked. Thy lost their sail boats and fancy cars (I don't know how) but were never prosecuted because the District attorney in their County was "too busy." They may be out there doing the same thing to someone else. My young neighbor friend apologized and has been sentenced to helping me restore the bottom of the speaker he used to climb into my house. I think it's a just punishment.

@noni1959 I'm glad someone did at least a bit of time. I'm frustrated with the judicial system. It seems to favor criminals.

@TheHorse She went to prison for about a year. It wasn't her only offense so they gave her some time. He claimed he didn't know she stole the items yet he was there and they had to carry out boxes. He wound up off the hook. That irritated me.

His situation or yours? I doubt we could break into this house without breaking a window. It was built in 2004 and everything fits nicely and locks, etc. It's good your little friend is helping you repair the damage he did.

I was the last person to break into my house. That was years ago and I very nearly stuck my foot in the toilet (the bathroom window was the only one easy to open from the outside).

@TheHorse I don't remember. It's been years. We'd left our 15-year-old in charge of the other 3. I was helping my husband on a job. We came in at 4 AM and realized neither of us had a house key with us. None of the kids heard me climb in through the window (bedrooms were next door and across the hall). I was half-way expecting to be met at the bathroom door by my son with a baseball bat.

@SophiaMorros That would have been...odd. I hope he's as good as I am at "checking his swing."

Oh that was really bad of him to not be careful of that item you cherished. I though you got burglarized but it looks like you allowed someone to break into your house to get some keys he left on your house.

In his mind, my house is his second house. We'd actually discussed how to get into my house if he really needed to before. He's not the criminal type.

Glad he knew how to get in. Restoring what he damaged will help him remember to think about that.

You "layed" with your neighbor?I think you meant to say played. Yes you did right, you told him how to properly break in your house. No, no one has but not for the lack of trying but I was home!

@TheHorse Why did he have to break in your house? Why couldn't he have waited till you got home? My apartment when i lived in the States was broken into because there was a flood and my parents house was broken into and I found it. It was not a pleasant experience.

I think you handled it OK. I have never had this house broken into, but I have had a couple of break ins in the past..and I was not happy especially time two..when some items of value were taken.

I have not had my sisters home broken into. But I have had her auto suffer a broken window from a bad person at night about one year ago.

Oh that is a bummer he damaged your property, what I would be more worried about is that he was able to break in so easily, that means anyone could.

It is good that he is helping you repair the damage that he caused. Once my younger one got locked inside when I came out for a minute. The wind locked the door. She was little and could not reach the latch to open it. I panicked at first but then I remember that my terrace door to master bedroom is open. I went to my neighbors terrace and from there climbed to the up floor and then jumped on my terrace and got into the house. I didn't break anything but took an usual way to enter it.
