Question of The Day- Do you know when it's time to throw away those half-full bottles of ketchup? Or mustard, mayo and other additives to make your food taste better? Yes, there is a time line according to The Food Marketing Institute. So when do you toss away those refrigerated condiments? I never knew there was a specific time frame? For me, when the condiment was empty that's when it was disgarded. Anyway here is a list of some condiments and the recommended time to consider replacing them... -Ketchup, Cocktail, or Chili sauce- Refrigerator after opening: 6 months -Barbeque sauce- Refrigerator after opening: 4 months -Horseradish in jar- Refrigerator after opening: 3-4 months -Mayonnaise- Refrigerator after opening: 2 months -Mustard- Refrigerator after opening: 12 months So, have you been holding onto any of those condiments a bit to long??? And do any of these expiraton dates surprise you? They all surprised me, lol. Source- Reader's Digest Photo- amazon.com

The timeline on them are pretty generous so except for the mustard I use them up prior to any expiration refrigerator date.

They all surprise me. I think my mustard is beyond the date. I'll need to look at the organic mayo I just bought that is compliant with my diet and is loaded with horseradish.

@dgobucks226 I can't tell you how old my mustard is. Looks like I should probably buy the smaller size so it's used up before the expiration date.

I don't buy those items. Isn't there an expiration date on the container?

Oh yes, certainly. That date is for an unopened jar and it's usually pretty far in advance. These dates I'm posting about are once the item is opened and put into the refrigerator.

@dgobucks226 I think they should have both dates. What do you think?

@1hopefulman Good suggestion my friend. Perhaps we should take it up with the FDA

We go through our condiments several times a year and clear out any that are old. Most of the time, they don't last past expiration dates.

@dgobucks226 Mustard stays the longest in ours too. Ketchup doesn't last as we go through it pretty frequently

I usually use the stuff before those dates but I usually will get rid of them in 6 months except mayonnaise I watch the expiration date on that.

Yes, I agree. Mayo has the shortest time frame and if spoiled would potentially cause an upset stomach or worse. I go through mayo pretty quick, so I should be safe, lol.
