Do you have trouble getting rid of things?

Hello myLot, it's a lovely, sunny afternoon here. How's your day been?
I have entirely too much stuff. If I focus I am good at only keeping around what I need, or at the very least putting things I don't need away with the intention of selling or donating them. But, being lazy, I've yet to do any of that so I am MAKING myself have a garage sale next weekend. So far I've gathered 4 boxes of things to give away! And most of that's just clothing.
However, getting rid of certain things can be difficult for me. I have a bad habit about keeping things I don't need. My main problem is extra pens/pencils/markers. I see those as art supplies!! And then I keep them and tell myself I'll use them on my next art project...but I never do
Another thing I have trouble getting rid of is books. I always like to reread stories....or I say I'm going to and then never do haha.
Nevertheless, I'm getting there! A few more boxes of things to sell and I'd say I'm set for a garage sale. And whatever is leftover I'm bringing to Goodwill or the Humane Society. I want to get rid of these things once and for all. I've got to do like Elsa says and, "Let it gooo, let it gooo"
So myLotters, done any decluttering lately? Do you ever find it hard to get rid of things? Anything in particular you like to keep around?

My mom passed away this week, and one of the things my brother and I are gong to have to do is go through her house and all her things and figure out what to do with it all. I can already tell we're going to have a tough time agreeing on things, because he wants to save everything, and I'm more along the lines of get rid of everything except for a few keepsake mementos. I just hope we can sort it all out without getting into any major arguments.

@isweartokira Thank you Bree, I really appreciate your kind words. I'm just taking everything one day at a time right now.
How are you? Is your week off to a good start?

I'm so sorry, Jeff. I can't even imagine losing someone like that. getting rid of things in this situation is even tougher. I really am sorry, I'm wishing you and your family well

@isweartokira Oh, the books go to others. They just add clutter. I do save my very good outfits that I bought years ago and handbags. To me, quality never goes out of style. I give some of them to my daughters-in-law if they fit them.

@DianneN I'm the opposite, books are waaay more important to me
it's not clutter if you organize it right. clothing is nice but I find I either outgrow it too quickly or I'm always painting so I don't wear anything too fancy very often. at least you hand it down and keep it in the family

@isweartokira like some water storage tanks, electronics that I don't wish to use. and few other things that I have to think about getting rid of in near future.

I also have a problem with books. I actually do read some books more than once, some three or four times. My best friend and I send each other books. It is crazy. I have hauled tons of books out of here but it still looks like a book store.

@isweartokira We have done it for years. I have sent books to other friends too. I put them in the church sale or on the free table in the laundry.

I try to read books more than once (some I do), but I usually get distracted by the next book
I like the idea of sending books between friends :)

I have a ton of trouble getting rid of things, things I haven't used in forever but I'll be like no i need them or if it's a past gift from someone and i dont use it im always like no they'll get their feelings hurt if i get rid of it so i end up with a ton of stuff i never use

fortunately I don't have that sentimentality issue. just remember, getting rid of the gift that is no longer used by you DOES NOT get rid of how the person felt about you when they gave it to you. getting rid of the sweater your great great grandma gave you doesn't mean you don't love her or appreciate her any less. for certain things like that, I'll take a picture of it to still keep the sentimentality of the item, but then give the actual item away so it's no longer clutter

It is hard to declutter. You try to use the rule that if I haven't taken something out of a box or a tote in 6 months I don't need it, but every time I got through a box or a tote I'm like, "I think I will keep it." It can be frustrating.
