Maps and Memories

When I zoomed in on my Appalachian Trail map to show a readable closeup of where my son has been hiking I had to resist the urge to go back to the original map and add a few pins on each side of the trail.
I have always been fascinated by maps. I like being able to see where places are in relation to other places and I like being able to see the many places I have visited.
The corner of the world where North Carolina and Georgia meet is filled with many memories for our family.
I look at that little bit of map and am reminded of our first visit to the area Christmas of 1994. Our oldest son, the one who is currently hiking the AT, was four months old when we went camping at Amicalola Falls State Park. Freezing rain fell during the night leaving a thin coating of ice on the outside of our tent.
In September of 2001, we ate pizza at a restaurant in Dahlonega when our camping trip was rained out. Our youngest child was a grumpy four months old and our two-and-a-half-year-old daughter had eaten entirely too many fresh blueberries (I will leave the consequences to your imagination).
I’ve lost count of the number of times we have “tubed the Hooch” (floated down the Chattahoochee River on inflatable tubes) in Helen.
In 2016 we spent a few days in Andrews to watch the solar eclipse.
My list could go on and on.
Many memories.

I've cut up a few road maps and atlases to include snippets in our family trip books. Somehow showing the distance we covered between point A and point Bon a map, accompanied by a photo to show how flat the landscape was, makes a much better impact than just the photo alone.

I'm a little worried about him right now. He's out of range of communication. In the middle of the woods and judging by the weather map the GA/NC area where he is hiking today is getting hammered with bad weather.

Yes, I do. As for your son, have you had news of him?

I've heard from him a few times. The last contact was on Thursday evening when he spent a night in town. He's in an area with very limited mobile phone coverage so I probably won't hear from him again for a few days.

I love maps, I have a very large world map covering a full wall in our family room. I like to look at the places where we have been. I always wrote a "travel diary", I wrote where we went, what we did where we had our breakfast, lunch and dinner. I am making HTML pages of my diaries, adding the photos we took. Memories are precious.

I keep travel journals as well and try to put together a photo book of images and notes from my journal with a few maps to have as a keepsake after the trip

@SophiaMorros we are waiting to hear the most recent update.
Yesterday was a gray windy, drizzly day. Today sunny....tomorrow, Tuesday and Wednesday we have rainfall warnings. Looks like the northern part of the province will set up Fredricton for their annual flooding.

@Morleyhunt I've got an Appalachian Trail specific weather app on my phone. It looks like the hiker will be dealing with thunderstorms before 7, thunderstorms between 7 and 8 and continuing thunderstorms throughout the day.
I think he's going to get wet today.

I'm planning to update his progress here once a week or so. I don't expect to hear from him until he's on a mountain that puts him in range of cell towers around Franklin. Hopefully, tomorrow.

Me too! I am always amazed by people who can't read maps and seem to have no interest in them.

Thanks. I think we're enjoying tracking his progress almost as much as he's enjoying to trail. Possibly more since we don't have to hike in the rain or deal with blistered feet
