Garth Brooks in Gainesville

Although many concerts have been played in our basketball arena over the years, it's been 25 years since a large outdoor concert was played in our football stadium. That drought came to an end last night when mega-country superstar Garth Brooks took the stage in front of 75,000+ fans. Another country star in his own right--Chris Young--was the opening act. In what felt more like a college football game atmosphere than a country concert, fans arrived early in Gainesville and on the University of Florida campus to tailgate and pre-party before the show. Tents, grills, corn hole games and beer were in force around town. The only difference was the twang in people's voices and the abundance of cowboy boots! Garth Brooks' wife, Trisha Yearwood, held a private tailgate party in front of the stadium before the show, and treated guests to unlimited barbecue and drinks. Yearwood, who has published several cookbooks in addition to being a country music star, treated the audience to several cooking demonstrations. During sound check on Friday night, Garth held a Q&A session with University of Florida students (who were admitted free into the stadium for sound check), and one student in particular asked if Garth would sing "I Won't Back Down" by Tom Petty to honor the Gainesville native, who passed away several years ago. Garth is well know for playing cover songs during his concerts, but admitted he hasn't played the Tom Petty song before and wasn't sure he and his band could learn the song in less than one day. When Garth took the stage later in the evening, fans went wild. It was evident that Garth Brooks is loved by both young and old. And Garth did not disappoint, singing many of his top hits that had the stadium both dancing in their seats, and signing along. Of course, the stadium went wild when in the middle of his set he broke out and started singing several Tom Petty songs, including "I Won't Back Down." His wife Trisha Yearwood joined him on stage and both did an electrifying performance of the iconic TP song. I'm sure residents in neighboring towns could hear the roar of the crowd at that point! I had an amazing time at the show, which is one that will go down in the history books (well, at least the Gainesville history books). Garth is only playing six concerts in 2019, all in large stadiums, so it was an honor that he came to our sleepy little college town to play a show. Have any of you ever seen Garth Brooks in concert? Although I've been to hundreds of concerts over the years, this was my first time seeing Garth Brooks. Have any of you ever been to a large stadium concert?

I'm glad you had an electrifying night with Garth Brooks in concert. No, I haven't been to a stadium concert, and I haven't seen Garth Brooks in concert. I don't know if he ever came here, but occasionally we do get big names here.

I'm sure you get some pretty big acts up in Green Bay. I would think that at some point in his career Garth Brooks has paid a visit!

@just4him I'm sure it was probably many years ago, as he "retired" for a long time, and then when he came out of "retirement," he took up residency in Vegas and has spent 2-3 years performing shows there.

So glad you had a great time at the concert. I haven’t been to a large stadium concert since I was in college. The last huge concerts I went to was at Madison Square Garden to see Sarah Brightman, Andrea Bocelli, and Pavarotti in various performances.

I've always wanted to go to a concert in MSG, but there has never been a performer I liked in concert there when I was visiting NYC. Maybe someday I'll have the chance!

@DianneN It has always seemed to me like Billy Joel played a lot of shows at MSG. So now that makes much more sense if you say he is there once a month! Now that's a concert I would love to see at MSG! I've seen him multiple times in Ft. Lauderdale and Miami over the years, but it would still be great to see him in NYC!

@moffittjc If there isn't a game, there is a concert. My son told me Billy Joel plays there once a month, and now I must get tickets!!!!!

What a great picture! Yes, I have seen Garth Brooks once and he was wild, smashing guitars and such but it was great! This was back in the 90's.

Glad you had such a wonderful night. It must have been awesome for the crowd but also for the group although I guess over time they do become slightly accustomed to it.

Not many musicians have a big enough following to play in large outdoor stadiums with 75,000 fans! Garth Brooks is only playing six concerts this year in stadiums, so I don't know if he'll ever get used to it, although it must feel good for him to have such a large crowd at his shows! Can you imagine if that many people showed up to one of your concerts?

@moffittjc It would be a nightmare. I'd leave them to it and to to a motel for the evening I think.

Thanks Bree! In the midst of some of my struggles lately (knee surgery, mom passing away), I needed a nice distraction. This concert did the trick for me. How have you been? Haven't heard from you in a while!

@isweartokira Thank you! I had a very relaxing Easter. I actually went to a local blueberry farm and picked blueberries! The locally-picked ones are about twice the size as the ones I buy in the grocery store, and have so much more flavor! I hope your Easter was nice too!

I was never much of a Garth Brooks fan, even though I liked a few of his songs, but I figured I couldn't pass up this opportunity of a lifetime. I mean, he is only playing six total concerts in 2019, and one of them was right in my backyard! By the way, I am now a big Garth Brooks fan. He put on one helluva show!

I missed out on going to see Kenny Chesney when he played a stadium show in Tampa at Raymond James Stadium, where the Tampa Bay Buccaneers play. I'm still kicking myself for not going to that concert! Probably one of my favorite stadium shows of all time was seeing Pink Floyd in concert in Tampa back in the late 80s.

@LindaOHio You are so lucky! I was born just a tad too late to enjoy some of the best bands that ever played. I've always said that if Paul McCartney ever plays a concert near me, I will go see him play. Not the same as seeing the Beatles, but still, it's the closest I'll ever get!

@resukill22 Me too! But there are not too many musicians or bands these days who are popular enough to fill an entire stadium, so it may be a while before we have another concert like this. The last one like this in our town was 25 years ago, when the Rolling Stones played a concert here.

Yes, Chris Young was a complete surprise. The official word was that there was not going to be any opening act, but I'm sure glad he surprised us with Chris Young! I've always been a fan of his, and have seen him only once before in Jacksonville (at another stadium show) when he was still relatively unknown.

Oh nice, I've seen Phil Collins as a solo artist, and also when he was with Genesis. In fact, I had front-row seats to the Genesis concert when they played at the Miami Dolphins football stadium. Aerosmith is one of my favorite bands of all time, and I have seen them a total of either five or six times. Some of those concerts in my younger, wilder days are hard to remember! lol
