Happy Monday everyone! Its late in the evening now and I'm about to retire for the evening, but had to talk about the critter we encountered today. We go for a walk almost every day. Myself, my mother in law and my two boys. Today, as we were walking, my oldest said, "Is that a squirrel? Is it dead?" We backed up and it was a squirrel. He was NOT dead, but had his head stuck in the upper most link of the chain link fence. In the image he is actually FACING the camera, but has his back ended twisted backwards so it looks like he is facing away from the camera. We attempted to free him without being scratched or bitten, but could not get him free. We didn't really go on our walk equipped with things like bolt cutters and thick gloves after all. We got home and told my husband who went back to try and save him, but the poor thing had already died. Probably broke his own neck with the way he was thrashing around. It was very sad and my oldest son (who is very emotional) was upset. I asked the husband if he got him out of the fence and he said no. So if the poor dear is still in the fence tomorrow I'll probably remove him and bury him for my son's peace of mind if nothing else. I feel bad, but I do wonder how he got his head wedged into that small chain link to start with. There was no food or anything like that around, so it just seems strange that it would have stuck it's head in there. Have you ever tried to help wildlife in distress? Were you more successful than we were?

I would try if I could. I once got a little birds feet untangled from some string. Poor squirrel. At least he is at peace and no longer suffering.

Yes, I am happy that his suffering wasn't much longer after we saw him. I hope he had not been there TOO long before we came by. But I really wish we could have helped him out.

Awwwww! Yes I try to help too. I often stop and tote turtles across the road.

I feel so sorry, poor thing, he killed himself trying to get out of that uncomfortable position. I have helped wildlife in distress a few times, I have always been successful.

I never faced such a pathetic situation. Wish I could save the life of squirrel. I couldn't face any accidental moment.
