New Laguna Beach Art Exhibit Coming Soon

The downtown area of Laguna Beach has this fun little phone booth which is used for special art exhibits. They change it every two years. They just announced that the next exhibit will have a Super-hero theme! I can hardly wait to see what they design. I will post a photo once they have it put together.
Laguna Beach may have one of the last places left in the world where Superman can change! LOL
(For those who ask me periodically, my husband's health seems to have stabilized again after his last heart event. He is feeling better, although he still has to contend with his chronic kidney disease and other medical issues. At least he is feeling better, which makes us both happy! Thanks everyone for asking. )

@DianneN - Ha ha! It is good to know that Superman now has at least TWO phone booths where he can still change! My daughter was with two of our grandchildren in the lobby of a charming old hotel which still had phone booths. She had to explain to them what they were for!

@DianneN and @DeborahDiane They have some in Lake Havasu near London Bridge. There are some scattered around the globe. I have seen them in Bermuda, Gibraltar Malaysia. The little crown on the top should be painted Gold. And funny DianneN when I was a kid pre-decimalisation in 1971 the phone boxes were funny. There were two buttons on the front. A and B. You put the money in pressed A to make the phone call when they answered you pressed B for the money to go. If the phone was not answered you pressed A again and you got your coin back Often as kids we would go into the phone box just to press button A to see if a penny would come out. Sometimes people forgot to press it! They were big old coins back then! Many people did not have phones back in those days and you would have to walk about half a mile to make a phone call!

@DeborahDiane . It's amazing that they are no more. Of course, they are still working in England and Scotland. We actually had to make a local call from a phone booth in Scotland when we were last there. We were so proud that we knew how to use the darn thing!

@DeborahDiane Maybe I misunderstood. Didn't you say art would be displayed inside the phone booth? I can see where a statue would be hard to move, but phone booths are often defaced or broken into. We have many statues and sculptures here in the downtown area of Paso Robles, too, and I've never seen one defaced yet. Our town also loves art.

@bagarad - I know this seems to surprise people, but Laguna Beach has over 6,000,000 visitors a year, and yet it is very rare for one of the hundreds of pieces of "sidewalk art' to ever be damaged. I have never heard of any of them being stolen.
Once, my friend and I were walking, and this charming little statue of a woman carrying shopping bags was gone from her perch. We were worried she had been stolen, but a homeless man who often sits on the bench near the statue assured us she had just been removed for cleaning. Sure enough, she reappeared a week or so later.
Considering the number of people who move past these works of art, most of them from out-of-town, it really is amazing. I think it may be because so many of the people who go to Laguna Beach are art lovers. Here's a picture of the statue which disappeared for a week! She's all dressed up for the holidays in this picture!

@bagarad - Yes, there will be art in the phone booth. They change the display every two years. I liked the display in the photo above. I thought the metal guy trying to get into the booth was humorous.
After that, they put a bunch of life size foam dolls inside, stuffed every which way, to show how many you could get inside. I did NOT like that display.
The newest one is going to have a Superhero theme. I think that will be a fun idea with the phone booth. It is always interesting to see what the various artists do with the booth.
You are right about Paso Robles. It is also a place with many statues and sculptures. When we think about it, it is amazing that there is so much art in many tourist areas of California, and it is very rare for any of it to be defaced, damaged or stolen. I think the vast majority of people really appreciate good art.
We are both very lucky to live in such interesting places!

That's neat . . . we'll have to look for that red phone booth! My mother in law ultimately moved to Laguna Niguel - so we'll have to check it out. I love that many cities are now putting in art installations - certainly makes the scenery more interesting! I'm glad your husband is feeling better!

@DeborahDiane The whole Laguna area is just beautiful. I just looked on the map and I guess Laguna Niguel is actually passed Laguna Beach (if we are going south) - we should be able to get there. We went to a wedding in Crystal Cove last year . . . maybe we went through downtown at some point but we didn't get to stop. I wonder how they have exhibited other art pieces on that phone booth - very cool idea!

@much2say - Yes, if you visit your mother-in-law in Laguna Niguel, you will definitely have to visit downtown Laguna Beach. The phone booth is on either Forest or Ocean. I get them confused, but they are both only a couple of blocks long, so it should be easy to find.
They are working on a new "entrance to Laguna" from Laguna Canyon Road, and it is supposed to be finished sometime in June. It will be even more charming to visit then. Did you know that 6,000,000 people a year visit Laguna Beach? I was stunned when I read that!

@much2say - I hope you visit Laguna Beach sometime and take a stroll around town. There are pieces of art, art galleries, and art festivals everywhere. Even many of the park benches are works of art. Stroll around Forest and Ocean to see some pieces of street art. Go into the Wyland Gallery on the PCH to see his fabulous sculptures of dolphins, and stroll out on his balcony for an incredible view of the ocean. Walk along Cliff Drive through Heisman Park and there are works of art every few yards. Here is one of many works of art you can see at the Wyland Gallery.

@jaboUK - Maybe someday the British will think of something fun to do with their phone booths. After all, the British generally have a great sense of humor. Look at you and your limericks! LOL

@jaboUK - Thank you, Janet. I just hope his health remains stable for a while. It seems as if we have a crisis about every six months.
I think this type of art exhibit would be perfect in Great Britain! Using the old phone booths and doing something creative with them is such great fun!

@crazyhorseladycx - Ha ha! Yes, there is graffiti out there, especially in Los Angeles, that can certainly get our attention. Mostly, though, I think of it as "wanna be artists" who will never "make it." LOL I've attached a picture of the Veteran's Wall Memorial which was vandalized in L.A. This is the wall they were able to completely repair and is now getting the extra security. No problems since then, but it was horrifying when it happened.

@crazyhorseladycx - So sorry to hear about the thefts in your area. I'm sure that Laguna Beach has some petty thefts, but they have an amazing amount of art around town and, as far as I know, none of it has ever been stolen or vandalized. Considering that the town gets 6,000,000 tourists a year, I think that is pretty amazing! (I'm glad my husband feels OK right now, too!)

That is excellent news about your husband. You know we do worry about you both! You know these British telephone boxes are rarely found these days. Some people buy them and do them up and use them as ornaments either inside their homes using them as book cases, drinks cabinet etc etc! They sell for thousands of pounds. Another bit of our history gone down the pan but with most people owning mobile phones and house phones these days they are rarely used. They were so unique and there are still a few around here and there. They look so much nicer than modern replacements. I look forward to the photos!
