Today is May day Bank holiday. This is usually celebrated in different countries on 1st of May. In the UK our bank holidays always fall on a Monday with the exception of Good Friday.
In total we have 8 public holidays one of the lowest number of holidays in Europe. Whereas the following countries have the most public holidays.
India 21
China & Hong Kong 21
The Phillipines 18 days
Thailand, Turkey, Pakistan 16
Japan, Malaysia, Lithuania, Sweden, Vietnam 15
Indonesia, Chile, Slovakia 14
Austria, Belgium, Germany,Norway 13
Spain 12
Canada Italy Denmark France 11
USA ,Australia New Zealand Netherlands Croatia Romania 10
Eire 9
UK 8
Mexico 7
Most of our holidays appear in the earlier part of the year Easter and May times the next bank holiday we are due will be the last Monday in August thereafter we will have to wait until Christmas.
There are calls to make St. Georges day a Public holiday supposedly also Shakespears Birthday which would be rediculous as it would just put an extra day in April. Most of the public would like to see a public holiday towards the end of the year perhaps end of October or beginning of November. This would be ideal to break up the year. My thoughts would be to have a national veterans day coinciding with 11th .11th Armistice day.
I think it would be rather nice to adopt India's public holiday system!
Most public holidays here usually end up raining. Although it has not rained today there is no sun and the skies are grey! Traffic is abyssmal. I learned a long time ago never to venture out on a bank holiday and sit in traffic for most of the day! Instead we usually do things with the family at home. My daughter and her family came here yesterday so my wife and I are enjoying a very peaceful day together!
I hope you are all having a great day!

@garymarsh6 Thank you Gary, the 1st of May was a non working day here, as in most European countries. The next Holiday here in Canton Ticino is the 30th of May (Assumption Day), this part of Switzerland has 15 Bank Holidays in total, more than the other Swiss Cantons.

It is supposed to be May day Some small towns and villages put on fetes and having Morris dancers, dancing around the maypole and such things. We don't do labour marches here as they do in some countries.

A bank holiday celebrates workers given a compulsory day of from work! Your biggest two would be 4thJuly and Thanksgiving!

I tend to stay home too when it's a holiday. Guess everyone is bouncing with joy at the news of the new baby boy today (Megan Markle and Prince Harry).

We ranked third but this could only be the one listed officially. There are other local holidays which vary from one area to another like charter day celebrations.
