1861 - The Great Comet of 1861 was discovered. It was visible to the naked eye for three months. It has an orbit of approximately 400 years and won't be visible again until the 23rd century. Amazing!
1941 - Ritchie Valens (Richard Steven Valenzuela) was born. He was an American singer/songwriter and guitarist. He was a rock and roll pioneer and the forefather of the Chicano rock movement. Sadly his career only lasted 8 months because he was killed in a plane crash with Buddy Holly, J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson and the pilot, Roger Peterson. He was 18 years old. A movie "La Bamba" was made about his life. His well-known songs are "La Bamba" and "Donna" which was #2 in the U.S.
1950 - Stevie Wonder (Stevland Hardaway Morris) was born. He is an American singer/songwriter, musician, record producer and instrumentalist. He lost his sight right after birth. He was considered a child prodigy and signed with Tamla Records at the age of 11. Some of his MANY songs include: "Signed, Sealed Delivered I'm Yours", "Superstition", "You Are the Sunshine of My Life", "I Just Called to Say I Love You". He has had 30+ U.S. Top 10 hits and has sold over 100 million records. He has an amazing 25 Grammy Awards.
