Marigolds are an annual flower that comes in a yellow, gold or orange blooms. They are very easy to grow and are quite popular due to this fact and the colorful flowers they produce. I picked up a couple of packs of Marigolds at Lowes on clearance. I got them mainly because they emit an odor that repels mosquitoes. I plan on potting some for the back porch to keep the mosquitoes away, thus keeping them form entering my house via the back door. I also found out they are excellent to put in a garden as they also deter crawling insects. I recently learned that marigolds were a safe flower and plant for chickens. Lots of plants and/or flowers are toxic to chickens so I watch what is planted here since I do have chickens. They are also safe for human consumption in salads or you can even make tea. Years ago, marigolds were used for first aid treatments. One way it was used was as an antiseptic for cuts. The oils from the stem of the plant was used for earaches and also to make eye drops for eye infections. Oils from the marigold stem was also used in tonics for coughs and colds due to its antibiotic properties. So the next time you plant marigolds remember how useful this plant really is. Photo: My own

@wolfgirl569 That is good to know. I hardly ever see rabbits here, but that is due to the stray dogs. Right now we only have one stray along with my dog. Hopefully, the smell keeps possums and raccoons away too.

That is a great place for them. And helps keep the bad buggies away.

They do have an unpleasant odor. I suppose that is what keeps the bugs away :)

@Kasjnak Looking at the flower is enough for me and the fact that they repel mosquitoes. I don't have to smell them...haha.

@Sreekala I have only seen gold and yellow ones and the African and French varieties in garden stores. I bought some of the French marigolds. The leaves are kind of ruffled and a two tone color. Very pretty.

I agree. I didn't know about the vast medicinal benefits. There are many that I didn't even list.

I did not know all that about marigolds. That is useful information. I think sometimes they even feed chicken marigold seeds, but I am not sure. We don't have too many mosquitos around here, but if they repelled ticks..sign me up!

I have some seed to plant here too, but these were only $1 for the 4 pack and then next trip I got French Marigolds for $1. Don't know what the difference is with the French Marigold so will be waiting for them to bloom.
