I Love My Irises

Irises in my Front Flower Bed

Irises are my favorite flower. They smell good. They look and feel good to touch. I love their smooth texture. I have a variety of colors and they take turns blooming. But there's one thing I don't like about them. They fade so fast. So do the stages of our lives. A baby is soon gone and replaced by a toddler, who is in turn replaced by a kindergartner, and so on. Our entire lives pass very quickly. The apostle Peter tells us in 1 Peter 1:24 : " For, "All flesh is like grass, and all its glory like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord lasts forever." In my photo you can see the irises still blooming next to the ones that have just faded. I imagine in a couple of days they will be gone. Some of the most beautiful flowers have the shortest lives. When we are in full bloom, it seems we will always be blooming. And one day we realize that we, too, will fade and die before long. It is then we lean hard on that Word of the Lord that will only get clearer when we see him face to face. Then we will bloom as we never have before. I'm glad I have that hope. What is your favorite flower? Why do you love it?

@amitkokiladitya I wish I had the time and energy to make it even more beautiful. I can't quite match the pictures I see on Instagram.

Your irises look beautiful. My favorite flower is gardenia, because it is beautiful like a white rose and it smells so good. I also like pansies and violets.

@bagarad - What a beautiful metaphor for life! I love irises, too, but you are correct that they fade quickly. As I watch my own children grow up and now our grandchildren, I realize how quickly life moves on!

At my age, each new day is a gift of grace I can't count on. Yet we have to plan for the possibility that we many still have many years. I guess that's your department.

@DeborahDiane I think many people's lives are in limbo, but they just don't realize it. There is so much noise in our world that it often drowns out what we don't want to think about.

@bagarad - Yes, you are right. I think a lot of people spend too much of their lives in limbo. We have been living like this for a few years, with regards to my husband's health, and it has almost become our "new normal." We try to stay focused on the here and now. I think that is important for everyone.

Wow! How lovely are those flowers... I love seeing blooming flowers. They are colorful and soothing to the eyes. They make you feel relax and happy too... But its true , that maybe the next few days they will die but the memories will stay and the good feeling they gave you will be cherished and will hope that in the next few days you will gonna see them again.

Once they die I won't see them for a few months. One variety sometimes blooms early and then again in April or May.

I'll admit that choosing a favorite is hard. Roses are also beautiful. So are pansies and day lilies and almost anything that's in bloom.

@bagarad So while you have them do you still get to appreciate them? I love roses because there is something about that that I like and to me they are so beautiful.
