I watch a show on cable about a cult called the FLDS who marry young girls to old men. The men are heads of the LDS sect and have multiple wives. The show was about two young women who had left the sect and help other young women do the same. This morning I was watching A&E Untold Story and it had a episode about young girls being married to older men. Not in any religious sect. It said that between the year 2000 and 2010 approximately 248,000 young girls across the US were married way under the age of 18. There are only two states that have laws that say 18 is the earliest age a young girl can marry. The episode showed about six different girls who had been made to marry as young as 9 years old. Either a respected church member was raping a young girl of 9 or a foster child was raping a girl of 11. Mothers, fathers, relatives, office clerks, judges, police, child protection---no one had a problem with this happening. Marriage was actually pushed to keep the men from being prosecuted, to protect them. These stories happened during 60's to the 90's.
Slowly a woman, who started an organization called Unchained At Last, is getting the laws changes in all the US states so no young girl under the age of 18 can get married.

Those FDLS children don't have a choice, that is horrible. However, if you are not a member of that church and not being forced to marry a man the age of your grandfather then I think 16 is old enough for a girl. My sister in law was 16 and I was just barely 18 and we are still married 50 years down the road.

I was 19 when I married. I think 16 is old enough if the girl wants the marriage. Glad to hear you are still married.

I was under 18.I was 15 when I lied and married but this was to a 19 man was my first husband. They need to specify the age difference. Like you can't marry anyone 10 yrs. older if you are under 18.

I do think the age should be 18. But, my neighbor was 15 when she married and her husband was 17 and they are still married 37 years later. So, in some cases, those marriages do work.

I think it really depends on the maternity of the young woman and if she wants to be married.

the age should definitely be 18 and over. I think girls younger don't even know what they really want.
