My hair was blue under the microscope....

I was about 14 years old. Around that age any way. And in Science class, we had to pluck one strand of hair from our heads and examine it under a microscope. I was confused as I could see my hair was blue. A friend looked at it too, called the teacher over for him to look and he didn't understand.
He asked me if I had ever dyed my hair and I told him no. And that is 100% true as I never did anything different to my hair until I was about 20. For some of my family members brainwashed me into "Never changing my hair." and "Don't cut it, it looks nice long!" Pfffft.
Anyway, I assured him I had never ever dyed my hair. He kept looking through the microscope, turned to me, face full of confusion and said "Out of the 25 years of teaching Science, I've never seen anything like this."
I sometimes randomly think about this and try to research why my brown hair appeared blue under a microscope but I can't find any answers.
Any thoughts? Or have any similar stories?

Hmmm, maybe it was related to something you were eating at the time.

@snowy22315 It's a good theory for sure! And now it's the only logical thing I can think but still at the same time not knowing if food affects the colour of our hair. I know food is a big part in how healthy or non-healthy our hair is. But not certain if it can do what it did to me. Very interesting theory! Thank you!

That is wild. I honestly do not know why it would appear blue under a microscope.

@LeaPea2417 Me either. I wish I knew. Bit freaky that not even the Science teacher knew.

I am a very old experienced Vet and we get hair sample in tufts to analyse the DNA or Parentage of the horses! I am really surprised hust to test the colour of your hair why you need to get a tuft of hair as a sample? I am rising this question as you are too young to understand all these things!

@AKRao24 aw ok I see. No worries at all.
But yeah it was blue back then when we were in Science class. It isn't nor has my hair ever actually been dyed blue so it's strange that it was blue under the microscope.

@AKRao24 I'm so sorry but I actually don't understand what you mean and what you think I don't understand just because of my age?
It was just a fun experiment suggested by the teacher. But I don't remember what we were looking for exactly. I just remember that my hair was blue when it shouldn't have been.

@LadyDuck Never. I never you then and I don't know now. I never used any type of spray in my hair. I was never that type of girl back then. In fact I don't now lol
Maybe it was something I ate but not sure if something I ate would have affected it. Maybe. Just weird my Science teacher didn't suggest that.

@VivaLaDani13 Black hair can have a blue hue under the light. May be that your hair is a mix of brown and black and you picked up a black one that looked blue. Did the teacher checked another of your hair? If not it was a big mistake.

@LadyDuck My natural hair is light brown. We only checked one more with another strand of hair and it was still the same. He also took the first one and switched it to another microscope but it was still blue. I think I was made differently somehow lol

I'm going to hazard a guess that it was the way the light refracted off it.

@petatonicsca Possibly but the teacher would have said that since he was a Science teacher. He should have known the light on the microscope would have done that to my hair but it didn't know anything about why it appeared blue. I wish I knew as it's bugged me since it happened.

@petatonicsca Cool example! But I don't think so no. I mean I'm not a scientists but if that was the case, at least one more person would have had their hair do that but I was the only one in that class and the only one my science teacher of 25 years had ever seen.
The whole strand was blue. Rearranging it made no difference.

@VivaLaDani13 Maybe like duck feathers that are colored one way when the light hits them at an angle and look different from another angle?

@TiarasOceanView It is. I just wish I knew the answers to why it was like that.

@Lolaze That is so cool! I do like that colour but not for my hair. But I can see it suits you well! I want black and purple one day!

@just4him Thank you for reading. It's something that has definitely had me wondering why it happened. Good chance I may never know. Still a cool mystery!

@Teekaaa It's ok. I have no idea either. It's a big mystery to me. Hopefully someone can think of something!
