What a Find!

Adam has just gone up into the loft to look for a lamp and discovered a couple of boxes that had my name on them. He passed them down to me and I could instantly see the writing was my dad's. I think he must have packed them up when he and Mum moved house in 1999 but I got a lovely surprise when I opened the first one. I received a toy fridge when I was about 6 or 7 - mid 1966/67 - and it was packed up together with all the little food and drink items to go in it. I got hours of fun out of it as a child. In the second one was my Camberwick Green village and all the characters from the British 'Watch with Mother' programme so that must go back to around 1964 to 1965. There was also my little coffee pot with four cups and saucers which I had round about the same time. I did have a little cooker with pans but not sure what happened to the cooker. However, Mum and Dad did pack up the pots and pans. They're probably worth a bit now but I wouldn't part with them for the world! I've also given Adam strict instructions not to throw out the box. It's got my Dad's handwriting on it and he passed away 19 years ago this June. Sentimental I know, but it's just a little part of him I want to keep. Having just looked at the contents of the fridge there appear to be two bottles of beer! Can't imagine that being allowed these days.

What sweet memories! I can understand keeping the box for your father's handwriting, but have you considered putting the items in a new box and cutting the part that has your father's handwriting off and preserving it instead of the whole box? When my mom passed several years ago, it took me years before I could start parting with her stuff.

I know what you mean. I think about my dad every single day and, come 8th June he will have been gone for 19 years. I know I may be biased but he was one of the kindest, gentlest and funny man I've ever known.

@olliesmum My mom has been gone 8 years. It doesn't seem like it's been so long ago.

@olliesmum I hope the cancer consultant had been reported. It is horrible that more could not have been done for him.

Adam, my partner's, niece came to visit us a few weeks ago and she commented that she doesn't get on with her mum - Adam's sister. But Adam told her not to do what he did. He didn't get on very well with his mum but he really missed her when she passed away. I'm just hoping that she'll take note.
