I recall a story on corruption retold by Thomas Friedman. I would like to put my own twist of the story. It is a story of three finance ministers meeting in South Africa. The host minister told his guests while sipping their brandy about a beautiful bridge situated across his villa. He stood up and pointed to a bridge, saying, "You see that bridge over there? Its 90% for the bridge and 10% here," pointing to his pocket.
After a year, the finance ministers met again in Columbia. The host, the Columbian finance minister, stood up and gesturing to an unfinished bridge situated just across his palace, saying, " See that bridge over there? 50% for the bridge and 50% here", pointing to his pocket.
A year has elapsed and they met again, this time in the Philippines. The Filipino Finance minister chose Boracay, the beautiful Island he owned. "See that bridge over there?", he intoned. Everyone looked at the sea " We see the sea, but where is the bridge?", they inquired. " 100% here," he pointed to his pocket with a naughty smile.
Of course, the story has not happened, as it is a made up story. It just shows that corruption is a global phenomena.
