I drove the tractor!

That might not impress you, but I grew up in the suburbs while in the Coast Guard so for me, it was quite the accomplishment. After I got married, we've lived in the country ever since and I would never want to live anywhere else. All our kids and grandkids were taught by their Papa to drive anything with wheels from way before they could even see over the steering wheel. That included cars, trucks, tractors, mini bikes, go carts, golf carts, a little red battery powered car, four wheelers, and whatever else. So it's no big deal that any of them can drive my husband's tractor around the farm, but today was the first day for me. Well, actually one day I raised the bucket with him standing in it to reach a limb in a tree. And I didn't even dump him out, thank God. I decided I wanted to learn to drive it and of course my husband said, "Well, get in." Then he told me how to drive it, raise and lower the bucket, pick up and dump. I moved four loads of dirt next to a cement slab he just laid next to the boat shelter. So, this city/suburb girl has one more country skill to enjoy. Sure hope he doesn't want me to start chopping fire wood. That's where I draw the line.

Good for you. I drove a tractor before ever I tried a car or motorbike.

@1creekgirl No, I grew up in a town but my love of horses took me to a job in the country. I was 17 and got to help on the farm as well as with the horses. My first vehicle was a motor bike when I was 18.

So did you grow up in the country? I'm glad our kids did and my husband also, but I didn't.

That is not necessarily an easy feat, congratulations! I grew up on a farm and still only ever drove a tractor once, and it did not end well as I did not know how to stop it.

@1creekgirl I was not going very fast, my Dad had a little spray left in the sprayer and was spraying along the driveway to keep the weeds down. He said wow, and nothing happened, and then stop, and then hit the clutch, to which I thought, what is that, and then hit the brake, I was trying to turn the tractor as there was a neighbour's truck parked in my path, when I hit the tailgate (which was open) and my Dad hopped up the steps to the cab to get me to stop. I was pretty young and the tractor was going very slowly, so there was not much damage to the tailgate, but my Dad realized that his daughter wasn't one of his 3 sons, and he didn't ask me to do anything outside anymore. When I think back to that evening it does make me laugh a little.

We do have a lot of farms and tractors in NC. What part of NC was that in?

@1creekgirl It was a small town called Newton. My uncle lived a few miles away in Maiden. It's located in Catawba. It is located toward the western end of the state. Wikipedia shows a nice map of it's location. Spent many enjoyable summers there visiting my grandparents.

Well I am impressed! I've never had the opportunity to drive a tractor . . . and honestly I'd probably be a bit afraid to .

I'm not quite as intimidated now as I was yesterday, but still need lots and lots of practice.

It's great to learn to drive any kind of vehicle; and it's one of my frustrations. I never learned how to drive. Now am wishing I can, even an ATV!
