This past week has been stressful. I have so much to do but I cannot get much, if any, of it completed. I have people look at me and say "if you need anything let me know." But when I say, I need the house painted or the grass mowed, they laugh it off, I wasn`t joking, I need help doing these things, right now, while I am tending to a sick man 24/7. So what do they mean when saying if I need anything to let them know?

It's become one of those catch phrases that mean nothing.

People should not be promising to help if they can't back up their words. In my case they know I will seriously pin them to their promises.

They are trying to assuage their conscience by offering, and their heart is probably in the right place, however..that doesn't help you alot. Maybe ask if they know anyone who would commit to mowing the grass or painting the house.

@andriaperry When I ask that then I a hoping that they have something that I can help with. I'm actually happy to help in some way.

It is so easy to say "if you need anything let me know.", it is a lot harder to do what people ask to do. I had this experience.

Another sentence I cannot understand is, people saying sorry about loved ones going. Sorry is something I would say if I did something wrong unwittingly. Or when I cannot help. When somebody is gone, when we say sorry, are we saying well, I do understand you have lost a parent/child, whoever, but I am not likely to help you?

@andriaperry I would do if someone should ask, I have no problems mowing the lawn of one of my neighbors.

Most of the time when someone says that to me anymore, most of the time I tend to laugh it all off. I am always needing something now due to all this stress with my Health. But try not to be a bother since most people tend not to care.

When someone is sick people shy away. I am a caregiver and I see it.

We experienced this same thing while my hubby was on no physical activity after his neck/spine surgery. We needed help with getting the grass mowed at our house in Louisiana. No way he could get the zero turn mower out of the shed, loaded on the trailer and let me drive his beloved truck. LOL. Several of his friends told him to holler if he needed help. When they would call he would mention that he needed to get the yard mowed but he couldn't do it. Nothing. His own brother said, "Oh, I will go over and take care of it for you." A week went by and then another week. Nothing. I asked him if he was going to say anything to his brother and ask when he planned on doing it. He said no. So I let it go. Needless to say, we went and mowed the yard after he was released by his doctor almost another two weeks out. Pityful. I think these people should be ashamed of themselves. Don't volunteer unless you mean it and mean to follow through.

Those are the moments when you discover who are your true friends. Some people just say things because they want to sound nice. It is the one's that come through that are our real friends. Believe me, I understand this one more, and more every day.

They say things to be polite but really don't have any intention of helping. Keep asking. Someone might help.

That's the indirect way of saying that they do care, but their sincerity is unreliable when the time comes. Politicians are usually doing that.

People donĀ“t realize how hard it is to get things done especially when someone is in your way too. Yes people are not eager to help no way.

I have had people tell me that too, and you can tell if they are sincere or not. Its a shame that people offer and honestly know how very pulled you are and need some help, maybe not on a regular basis, but when you make a suggestion, its obvious that you need that help then. I never offer unless I am ready to take a suggestion and actually do it.

Maybe they mean chicken soup or a burrito. Heh. If I lived next door, I'd certainly mow your lawn. It would be exercise for me, a mowed lawn for you, and probably an educational experience for Horse Jr., who would want to help.

"if I need anything to let me know" is just a statement. Don't ever make a mistake to believe it blindly. Only 5% people would do things when they say this, and they will be the once who would eventually do without even saying much. Just wishing you more strength....
