I found this picture that was sent to me a long time ago. The lady is seen having to manage both her child and dog and seems to have effectively solved the problem.
The child obediently walks along and does not seem to mind the dog being carried.
The dog looks contented and why not!!!

Nope, that would not be me lugging that big dog. I would carry my child and have the dog walk beside me.
