Horse and Jockey Village - I wonder how it got its name

Every country has its strange place names. Australia has at least its share if not more than its share. So I hope you won’t think I’m being rude or disrespectful by sharing this photo of a road sign pointing the way to a village called ‘Horse and Jockey’. Horse and Jockey is in County Tipperary. There seems no clear reason for its name. In 1980, the ‘Derrynaflan hoard’ was discovered near the village. These 8th or 9th century religious objects are believed to have been hidden on an island of dry land in Liskeveen bog during Viking raids of the 10th and 11th centuries. Some, probably most, Irish villages have incredible histories. I find them really fascinating.

Don't the guide books explain the place names?

@JudyEv Why don't you write to the town council and ask? They may be pleased about your interest.

@MALUSE That's a good suggestion. I just might do that.

Wikipedia doesn't give much help. I haven't looked in any guide books.

We have many towns in Florida that were obviously named by northerners who flocked to our state in the winter for it's warm weather. Check out theses names: Winter Haven, Winter Garden, Winter Park, Holiday, Frostproof and Christmas.

@JudyEv They are tiny little towns. Christmas is always fun to drive through. They keep Christmas decorations up all year round!

@moffittjc You could ask them but I doubt they'd understand the joke!

I like 'Frostproof' and 'Christmas'. They sound quite modern names.

Unlike with Thurles and Holy Cross, the Irish (Erse) name for Horse and Jockey doesn't seem to correspond to the English one. I wonder what it means? (I'm assuming "On" means "village of")

The Irish language seems very intricate and involved. I've never gone into it at all to try to learn any meanings.

@AliCanary I don't know what levels I am. I've been really hitting the German this week as we're going there tomorrow to stay with a friend's Dad. She speaks English but he speaks very little. I concentrated on French because I thought I'd need that more.

@JudyEv - Duolingo has Gaelic (which is more a Scottish language), and I'm tempted, but I absolutely have to become fluent in something before I take on new projects. I tested my levels and I'm only A2.1 in Spanish and A2.2 in French :/

I sometimes wonder how places got their names too. Some of the town's in Pennsylvania are named for coal or coal mines,

Sometimes keeping a name has its significance which gets lost over a period of time.

That's an unusual town. We giggle over surnames and say 'I wonder how they got their name' - names like Longbottom, Alcock, Bueglehole, etc. Very juvenile are we sometimes.

I love to hear that items that were buried years ago are found. It is so interesting to see what was important long ago...
