Yesterday, we passed through the village of Termonfeckin in county Louth, Ireland. Feichin was an Irish saint and ‘Termon’ (Tearmann in Irish) means ‘sanctuary’. It is believed a medieval monastery was founded there by Saint Feichin of Fore in the 7th century. In the late 12th century, an Augustinian monastery was founded there followed by an Augustinian convent.
We visited the castle, handing over 50 euros to the lass at the neighbouring house as a deposit on a massive key which let us into the castle area. This is a 15th or 16th century tower house of three storeys. The staircase was steep and narrow. You had to place your feet sideways on each step. There was no handrail but we went up and down without incident.
An interesting feature is the corbelled roof where flat rocks are laid one over the other with each successive one protruding a little so that the opening becomes smaller and smaller until it becomes completely covered. I hope you can see it in the photo.

@lovinangelsinstead21 Some I will write about so that everyone can see the photos. Here is another one of a small hole which was filled in in the same way. I guess vandals put the 'r' and 'R' on the stones.

The town gets great mileage out of 'feckin'. All the souvenirs use the term in some way.

It can be hard to show some things. This was taken looking straight up at the ceiling. I hope to have a photo of the tiny staircase later.

I miss all of the castles that we saw while we lived in Germany. Most weekends we'd go see a different one.
