Students Get Free Laptops When Graduating

I always say that nothing surprises me any more when I hear something I never heard of before. My grandson is graduating high school this week and yesterday after one of his classes the teacher told everyone in the class that they could take home the laptop they have been using all year. They now owned it for good. I never heard of such a thing but was so impressed. He has had the same laptop since he started in that school. It is in perfect condition. It certainly saves the family money and the kids will always remember that kind of special high school experience.

It is a gift that keeps on giving. The school probably ordered new ones or are going to a different system. It was great that they gave the old ones to the graduates instead of selling them.

@GardenGerty Yes, until it gets too old to update. Do you mind sharing what brand it is? I have a Dell and they want money to update the drivers.

That is a nice thing to know! Who is the authority who in act gives permission to keep such things permanently with students? Do they decide about this in advance or it is a spontaneous decision?

@ramapo17 , That is wonderful thing to know! In India also students from higher classes were given free Laptops in one state and unfortunately they were sold n the market in next few weeks by the students!

I am sure it was well thought out and might have started before my grandson ever went to high school.

@AKRao24 Wow, I can see that happening if the kids were not going to use it in the future.

@ramapo17 - That is wonderful! It will help the students get off to a good start, and they are already comfortable using that particular style of computer with its unique software. Great idea.

I thought it was such a good idea too. I think all the students took care of them through the year knowing it was going to be theirs at the end of the year.

@ramapo17 - You just made an excellent point. Teens can be careless, but if they know they will benefit by being careful, that is a good incentive to take care of the computers. The schools get a huge discount when they replace them and get new, updated ones for the next class of students, so it benefits everyone.

Wow, I hate to ask but what kind of area is this school in? The ghetto, a middle class area or a rich area? My guess is that it is a richer area cause that doesn't happen in my low/middle class town and I'm pretty sure in a ghetto/poor neighborhood that is not happening. But hey "they" tell us there is no special treatment in a those rich areas when it comes to schooling LOL

It is a nice area but not in a "rich area". Normal everyday people that the parents go to work everyday and some of the students have after school jobs. My grandson worked since he went into the freshman class.

@Bensen32 I never heard of it before either. It is a good incentive to keep the computers in good shape knowing that they are going to own it at the end of the year.

That's so nice. Unfortunately, this is not the case here, and we have to buy everything ourselves. I'm sorry that my child can not go to school where the conditions are better, somewhere in Europe at least, but I sincerely hope that at least it will work where it will be paid as much as it deserves, I do not go into it to work for some miserable money. That's why my child is attending a private school where conditions are as much better than state schools. And how am I fighting with that? That only I know

It really is @Tampa_girl. so many kids cannot afford to buy one and this gives them one to use at home or possibly wherever they are going now that school is out.

I've heard of some school districts doing this, but our school district doesn't. It's a good idea though, especially since technology keeps changing rapidly and the school districts would have to replace many of the laptops anyway. So better to just let the students keep them.

I guess he must go to private school or something because here you have to buy whatever you want there is no hand outs no one here can not afford that but i think if you work for what you want in life and pay for it you would take care of it and it would mean so much more to you in the future.

He does not go to a private school, he goes to a public school. The computer he got was the one he used all year in class.
