How radio stations work

So, after years on years of threatening to do this, I finally did sign up for the free radio training at the local college radio station. I did this 7 years ago and never got too far. But after hearing a literal dozen people tell me to do something with my voice... and being interested in radio anyway - I thought I'd try it.
So far I've taken the tour , recorded the demo for reading news, recorded the demo for music show and trial run the cd players and computer system. (It's true - you really are a disc jockey, not everything is computerized, so you still jockey the discs around)
The next steps are sit ins (3) - you sit in with an on air DJ 3 times and then you are cleared to go on air yourself.
So far I did 1 "break" in which you tell the listener what you just listened to and what's coming up.
So, things I didn't realize -
1) you repeat yourself, a lot.
2) you know how they always say what station you're listening to , like, a lot? That's a FCC rule.
3) Yes, there is a big red button that cuts out the last 15 seconds of broadcast before it goes out (incase you say a swear)
4) There is a lot of button pushing and computer typing
So far, I know enough to know that I don't know much at all but I'm curious where this journey will lead me....

@DianneN I would love to hear about it. I'm actually very impressed with Timberlake as an actor

Glad you got a break in. I have ALWAYS been interested in radio. I have been told I actually have a fairly good voice for it, and I can do voices, so I always thought it might be fun to do spots or voice overs as well. It's an interesting field and I hope you do well with it.

Thanks Jim, I'm having lots of fun so far. I hope you get the chance to do it. Do you have a college station in your area? Maybe they do a similar program in your area?

@FayeHazel We probably do. Not sure I would have the time. But it would certainly be something interesting to check out.

Thanks! I do wonder if this could lead to other opportunities - a paid dj gig? Voice work? Pre-recording a show? We will see :-)

It sounds interesting. That definitely would be a really neat career and their are so many different job aspects to it not just playing music.
