My father-in-law was a vintner in Sardinia. He made the most delicious wine. I (a German) learnt to my great surprise that in Italy wine isn't drunk outside meals. No sitting together in the evening on the balcony, looking at the stars, chatting and guzzling wine. Only tourists do that.
When we visited in summer, I learnt, however, that wine can also be used in a kind of dessert whose preparation is no effort at all. The peach season begins in June. Italian peaches are wonderful. When they're fully mature and juicy, you peel one, cut off small pieces which you let glide into a wineglass or whatever you've got handy. You fill the glass to the brim with strong red wine. The longer you let it stand, the more the pieces of peach soak up the wine. When you think the time is right, you take a fork and pick them out. Then you drink the remaining wine which has a slightly peachy taste. Ah, delicious! I can't think of much that tastes better.
I have Sardinian wine sent from a big company here in Germany. But you can take strong red wine from other Italian regions, too, of course. In case you want to try this speciality, don't buy cheap plonk. I can't imagine that the taste would be good.
Salute!
