Update on My Retirement

United States
June 14, 2019 4:03pm CST
Had my phone interview with the Social Security office. It was enlightening to say the least. You can only gross a certain amount in a calendar year. I have nearly maxed that. That being said, I need to figure out when I will retire. It will be earlier than my first chosen date of August 30th. So, I guess it is time to get out my calendar and calculator and figure out when the best date will be. Earlier retirement actually doesn't sound too bad!

@BelleStarr I think we can manage on what income I will get from SS and other means. I will only have to work part-time, but that is doing something that I truly enjoy.

It sounds like your working days are really numbered now. I'm sure that you will keep yourself very busy when you retire raising your daughter. You'll be there for her for all of the school trips and outings, there to send her off in the mornings, and also when she gets home at the end of the day.

Because she is an only child I will be able to dote on her much more. Something that I wish I could have done with my children when they were young.

@Juliaacv she can be challenging, kids are like that. But, I am okay with it. Love her to pieces and enjoy her presence every day.

@ElusiveButterfly I cannot imagine what your heart has gone thru up to this stage, but it sounds like you've got the perfect attitude and that you'll really enjoy parenting her. She's a lucky little girl.

Yeah, what they allow per year before you turn 65 is very low. Unless they changed it with the 70 retirement age now, You can make as much as you want when you turn 65.

I have to wait for that. I am retiring early. The age I can get full retirement is 67 1/2. Not waiting for that.

I need to go back to work before I screw up my Soc. Sec, I have a friend and he was working on his own for 10 yrs and now they won't give it to him because they have no one to go back on it for if that makes any sense. Enjoy your retirement, its supposed to be fun

@ElusiveButterfly Yes, his whole life but his back started getting bad so he just worked on cars from home so it wasn't really a business but because they said he didn't work for a company for 10 yrs he could no longer file.

Congratulations on your well deserved retirement. I'm rapidly approaching that early retirement age and I've been trying to read everything I can so that I can make the best decision I can. I've heard that there's a threshold on what you can earn before Social Security starts reducing their contribution so I've also been doing some research on side-gigs. I'd love to be able to just totally retire but with just Social Security's monthly contribution I'll never make it. Good thing I have a couple other pensions to help out.

My husband is the main bread winner and if we watch what we spend, we should be okay. He understands the reasons I need to retire and is okay with it. With my working a part-time job we will make ends meet.
