Have you heard about the US tourist deaths?

One of the big stories circulating on the news lately is the alarming story of five or more US tourists dying during their dream vacations to Dominican Republic. They were staying in resorts closely related to each other. There were accounts of how many of them had died after drinking drinks from their hotel mini bars.
The resorts have all attributed the deaths to fluid build up in the lungs and heart attacks. But, all these people were healthy before they left on their vacations.
There have been a few accounts from previous guests who did not die, they have said they got very sick from drinks from the mini bar. But, they were able to recover.
The FBI is investigating. There is talk and speculation on the news that the people could have been poisoned due to cheap bootleg liquor or the low grade pesticides used at the resorts. Also, it is possible a serial killer some how poisoned the drinks.
It will be interesting to see what the cause is. I know this has hurt tourism there. But, oh well, it is sad, but the truth needs to be found out what happened.
Suspicion is growing that pesticides used to fumigate rooms in this tropical paradise may be responsible for several of the deaths—but not all of them.

I find it interesting that the article includes the phrase "vacation of a lifetime." I've been to the Dominican Republic, and I wouldn't necessarily call it a vacation of a lifetime. The DR is a poor, dirty country, and crime is rampant there. To me, that is more of a drag on their tourism than the deaths of a few tourists. Look what happened to baseball player David Ortiz. He got shot in his own country. The government of the DR really needs to focus on cleaning up the garbage and the crime if they want to increase tourism in their country.

@moffittjc Wow, that is interesting. A too dangerous port to dock into tells me a lot.

@LeaPea2417 When I lived in south Florida I used to go on a lot of cruises, and on one particular cruise we were supposed to stop in the Dominican Republic, but they had to re-route us to another port because they said the DR port was too dangerous to safely disembark passengers.

@JustBhem Another thing about tourists that is sad, is I have heard stories of people dying in car crashes, plane crashes, people falling off cliffs , drowning, on vacation. It really is sad to think about.

That is sad about their deaths there. How did they die? I agree, I also don't think Mexico is safe for Americans to travel to these days.

@LeaPea2417 On every occasion they were found killed, but of course they don't give the details out in the press that it is anything more, but the families will tell you the truth and it is scary. I will never set foot in that country.

I agree. I don't understand why so many American's are attracted to going there when there are so many beaches right here in the USA.

That is sad for the bar owner he would be investigated on and might lose his business having a bad reputation already they would be avoided by many tourist there. I hope that they could solve the mystery behind the killings and find the real culprit with them. I am suspecting poor hygiene with the bar operator that their drinks may have been contaminated by some toxic chemicals they are mixing with their drinks.

I had heard about these cases there seems to be an extraordinary increase in previously healthy people dying in the hotels there. There needs to be an investigation to see if there is a link! Personally the Dominican republic is a place I would not consider going to!

I agree, a thorough investigation must be done. And I too would not want to go there. I have never had the desire.
