I have always heard about the YMCA. I even, as a jr high student, learned an abbrieviated history of the organization. It has been only recently, though, that I have realized the impact the YMCA has had on America. YMCA is an anagram for The Young Men's Christian Association. Founded by George Williams and associates in the 1800's, to offer prayer and Bible study to men in London. The living conditions in the cities during the Industrial Revolution was appalling. Williams wanted to minister to these men who were working far away from home and living in deplorable conditions. The YMCA was founded by evangelicals and was one of the most successful ministries ever founded. It crosses racial, social, and denominational barriers. Although founded for men, it is now an organization focuses on both genders and any age. In 1866, the NYC YMCA adopted this slogan: "The improvement of the spiritual, mental, social and physical condition of young men." That is exactly what the organization has become, but for men, women, and children. My daughter and I love being members of the YMCA. We joined last year and greatly enjoy our time in the gym and swimming. The employees are some of the friendliest I have ever met. I would love to be a part of a ministry that has such a great impact on people.

It was also founded in London, but the main headquarters is stationed in Switzerland. It stands for Young Women's Christian Association. It is not as much of a health and fitness center but an organization to aid women in a little over 100 countries to gain equal rights and fight against abuse and oppression of women.

I’m not Christian, but spent many years at our local YMCA as a child. I have very fond memories.
