Why horseradish sauce? I don't understand.

I don't know about the rest of the world, but here in the USA, horseradish sauce is a popular accompaniment with beef. Roast beef, French dip sandwiches, hot roast beef sandwiches - all of these things either automatically come with it or the condiment is offered.
Now, I'll eat horseradish as part of cocktail sauce ( , but i don't want it on my beef. I don't want my beef hot and spicy unless it's part of a dish that already is.
Why and when did the habit of horseradish with beef even begin? Does anyone here like it? Why?

Don't know the history of horseradish, but I like it...so much so I bought a bottle of it for home. I like the sort of sour taste and horseradish is good for your health.
I like putting horseradish on my sandwiches I make at home for my deli roast beef or the beef I cook up at home. I like Worcestershire sauce too.
Benefits of horseradish include its ability to aid weight loss, lower blood pressure, build strong bones, boost the immune system, and stimulate healthy digestion.
