"He is Coming!" Nothing to do with Religion

I'm in the mood for story telling. Hope you like it. In a small rural community, billboards were place in many prominent places with the announcement, "HE IS COMING!" A few days later it was replace with the message, "HE WILL BE HERE NEXT WEEK!" The town was abuzz with curiosity and bewilderment. Everyone was trying to outguess their neighbor as to the identity of "HE". Some thought it might be a famous actor, other guesses were a singer, a star athlete, a TV personality and even a politician. (OK, some folks argue for the second coming of Jesus.) Needless to say, interest was at it's peak when the final sign was put up with the news that "HE IS HERE!" Further down the billboard was the time and place, 7:30 P.M. at The Majestic (only theater in town). Hours before the schedule time, there was already a queue of people lining up to get in first for the better seats. The theater quickly filled up. Practically the whole town was there. In the semi-darkness of the old style cavernous structure that had passed it's glory days, people stared at the stage with bated breath. Many could hardly keep in check their excitement. Some fidgeted impatiently in their seats. The stage curtain began going up and you could hear a pin drop.(Anyone bringing a pin to a movie house is definitely up to no good!) It began in the front row seats. A steady murmur of disbelief. Like a tidal wave rushing to shore, it rose to a crescendo as reality finally hit the people at the back rows. Suddenly the audience erupted in a combine force of disgruntlement. There were catcalls and angry words. Popcorn were thrown at no one in particular, seats slammed or pounded on. But the crowd eventually dispersed. Many sheepishly left under the cover of anonymity provided by the dim-lit theater, hoping no one recognized them. There will be days to come for them to contemplate the duplicity and how easily they were victimize by their gullibility. The hall was quiet. On the stage was a large sign that read, "HE HAS LEFT".

Thanks. Unfortunately I have no idea. I was part of the audience that got scammed.

@josie_ Is this scamming? I thought you use this term only if you lose money. This seems to be a case of *fooling* people. To what end remains a mystery. Or did you have to buy a ticket to get into the theatre?

@MALUSE _The story is fiction but I hope the humor provided some respite from reality. Same goes with my comment as to it being written tongue in cheek in hopes of trying to be funny.. I suspect your respond was written with the same thing in mind albeit with dry humor. Seriously, it's difficult to gauge the kind of humor of people from different cultures. what one finds funny may turn out offensive. Maybe you can explain German humor given the stereotyping of Germans as being a serious and no nonsense people?

@LadyDuck _A person can be curious but must be observant to avoid the pitfall of "tunnel vision" cause by the misdirection of their attention.

Thanks. It's fiction but much worse in real life. It's difficult to separate trusting people and not being gullible.

The story gives us food for thought! We may always be gullible as long as we are still star fans.

Fortunately I'm not star-struck although I have favorite movies stars whose films I enjoy watching. My gullibility comes from my trusting nature.

That was my intention, to keep your attention. Not to fool but to entertain. Thanks.

@arunima25 _Again, thank you. The writing bug occasionally bites me. Would the underlying message be , "curiosity killed the cat" or "a fool and his money are soon parted"?

@josie_ What a let down and disappointment. So what did people do after they saw the sign?
