Just Worked My Last Weekend!

United States
June 24, 2019 5:45am CST
I had to work this past weekend and worked it with a smile. It was my last weekend to work with this company. After sitting down with my trusty calculator, a calendar, and my current pay stub, I tallied up what my earnings would be until the end of July. Because you can only earn a certain amount while drawing Social Security, I had to make sure I had wiggle room to be able to work the part-time job I have committed to when I retire. My calculations told me that if I ended my current job sooner, I would be able to give at least 6 hours a week to the part-time job without being penalized by Social Security next year. My current job requires I work one weekend a month. The next weekend I would have been required to work is July 20-21. I decided to put my notice in for the 19th of July. No more weekends for this gal! So, in 25 days, I will be officially retired. I have 5 days that I have taken off for vacation July 4-8, so that will be even less I have to work. Can you tell I am really looking forward to this new chapter in my life?

Being able to spend quality time with my kiddo, and my mother is something I look forward to. Doing things just for me is a bonus too.

I was asked if we could afford the loss of income. My reply was that there are more important things than money. We will adjust.

@BelleStarr now that I am retiring, my hubby is looking to the future when he will be able to retire too. He has at least 20 years before he can retire.

@ElusiveButterfly And so have we, with the lower taxes etc it ends up not being as dramatic a change as you might expect.

Congrats on working your last weekend. I am sure that your remaining days left will fly by. I work part time, and I really like this, its fitting for my last decade of working.

Because Little Miss will be in school I will have time to work a part-time job. It is something that I enjoy doing so it won't seem like working at all.

I had a similar feeling today. It was the last day substitute teaching with a particular class. Next year they go to middle school and I don't sub there.

Subwork can be trying. I once was the one that made the calls to find substitutes for teachers and support staff. Many did not want to go to certain schools or sub for certain age groups.

@ElusiveButterfly I know some refused to sub for that class. I hate to refuse, I know the teacher needs a sub. I dealt with it by filling up my schedule with other assignments. I worked way more than I want to.

There was a time when I didn't mind working weekends. Now that I have a little one, it isn't something I like to do. I've paid my dues. Time for me.
