Are you up to become a disciple?

The Liturgy of the Word in today's Mass is a little difficult to understand. A reason, perhaps, why the Jews did not understand our Lord Jesus. Take for example the calling of Elisha as the successor of Elijah. Elisha was a rich farmer, he owned some 24 oxen which he slaughtered and fed to his people before following Elijah. First Kings 19:16b; 19-21 Paul, in his epistle to the Galatians spoke of freedom from bondage of the flesh, and only then can one serve another. Galatians 5: 1, 13-18 In the Gospel, our Lord did say to whom who wishes to follow Him - "Let the dead bury the dead." For "No man putting his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the Kingdom of God." Luke 9: 51-62 Can anyone actually turn away from family and wealth and pleasure to follow Jesus? That is exactly what our Lord is asking. An unconditional obedience and love. Up to becoming a disciple?

My pleasure. I strained my auditory nerves listening to these stories this morning at Mass.

@sophie09 Yes. The church ambiance helped. Noontime Mass has just all the pews filled, not many children around.

@eileenleyva There is the Father and there is the Son and the Father is greater and Head but they are one as husband and wife are one and we are all one. What translation of the Bible do you use?

Yes, we are God's disciples. I have been serving the Church for 39 years as first counselor in the Bishopric, as Elders Quorum President, teacher in Seminary and Institute of Religion without any remuneration or payment received. I serve the Lord free. Our youngest son, my junior has served the Lord for 2 years as a missionary, stopping his college studies and we're the one supporting him every month until his mission is completed. I stop my drinking since I joined Church, sacrificing my friendship with my friends who are drinking, but in return I haven't lost them. In fact they're very proud of me and happy for my membership in the Church.

As of a few minutes ago, when I answered your discussion, this was a surprise. Yet, when one is called to service, our Lord Jesus has it all planned. Bring our Lord to people who know Him not yet. It is what apostleship means. Spare the Catholic faith of criticism though, as many sects do, for our Lord loves the Church He instituted. I know naman you don't criticize the Catholic faith, Reminding lang.

@Nakitakona That is good. The Catholic Church has been attacked inside and out, infiltrated by those who wanted to topple down the Church. But our Lord built the cornerstone on Peter, the Rock, and the Church will never be destroyed.

@eileenleyva No. We don't criticize. We don't find faults. We do respect them as they respect our belief too.

That is one difficult question for an ordinary follower to follow since by nature we are created to really work for ourselves and feed our family. Discipleship means you ought to leave everything else and follow Him. That is difficult that only priests could do.

@rsa101 True. The apostle is required to give up family, friends, wealth, and even one's life.

@eileenleyva Yes that is why it is hard to become one because you really have to leave your comfort zone and follow HIM. Maybe that is why also there are very few called and chosen to do that hard task.

God has put parents next to Him in the Ten Commandments. Honor thy father and thy mother. He made a noble decision. Parents must be cared for in old age.

This may be a duplicate answer as I don't know what happened to the one I just wrote--argh! technology!! I am Jewish--what makes you think I don't understand Jesus? I may not accept Jesus as YOU want me to but that doesn't mean not understanding.

I am sorry. I meant the Jews in the time of Jesus. The Lord's answer could sound cryptic to them. Even this day and age, the lines seem obscure, a bit difficult to decipher.
