Is a toothpick harmful?

I've almost stopped using them, but they seem to be very commonly used, especially when food is stuck between teeth. Does it cause any harm like loosening the gum, increasing the teeth gap and causing blunt trauma? Maybe it can cause injury. Have you ever had a problem using toothpicks.

I use them in finger foods like Marguicha does but don't often use them on my teeth. I guess as long as you're careful, there shouldn't be any problems.

Some dentists say that can cause gaps in teeth.

@pitstop I guess it depends how aggressively you use it.

The dentists don't suggest to use the toothpick. I also don't use it. I use dental floss and waterpick.

I've never used a water pik. I should look at what it is.

I use toothpicks for other uses. I use them to pinch olives and cheese so that people can eat them without using their fingers.
