Fun Facts About The Eiffel Tower

Several years ago we were lucky enough to visit Paris and, of course, we went to see the Eiffel Tower.
Some interesting facts about the Eiffel Tower are:
• It was built in 1889 as an entrance arch to the 1889 World's Fair.
• The design was put forward in a competition and subsequently won.
• The engineering company of Gustave Eiffel came up with the design.
• Four lattice girders were put together to form a steel pylon held in place by metal trusses.
• The wrought iron component weighs 7,300 tonnes.
• All parts were formed and assembled off-site.
• Eiffel's licence was to stand for twenty years after which it had to be
dismantled.
• By 1909, the tower was so useful as a communications tower that it was allowed to remain in place.
• It is 1,050 feet tall, about the height of an 81 storey building.
• The 18,038 pieces of metal were held together with two and a half million rivets.
• The base covers 412 square metres.
• It is painted every seven years and requires fifty tons of paint.
• There are 300 steps to the first level, 300 more steps to the second level and an elevator (lift) to the top.
• During World War II, the cables of the lifts were cut to prevent Hitler's forces from ascending the tower.
Despite much controversy when it was first erected, today the Eiffel Tower is the most visited fee-paying tourist site in the world. Thousands, just like us, visit the site each year. It has become an internationally recognisable cultural and artistic feature that is distinctively French.
I’m sure you would all recognise the Eiffel Tower but this photo details part of the intricate ironwork. And wouldn’t you have loved to win the contract for supplying the rivets?

Not sure what to say really. Ain't that unlike me?
I don't find it particularly ugly although it doesn't fill me with awe either.

Every time I am surprised that such an ugly construction is the most visited in the world. The Farm Market in the small town in front of Monte Carlo (Beausoleil) was also designed by Gustave Eiffel. Le Marché Gustave Eiffel, where I used to go almost every morning for my fresh fruits.

@JudyEv We still live in the midst of historic places, not the same we had in France, but old Mills, Railroad Stations, Castles and the Mountain right behind us (Monte San Giorgio) is a must for fossil enthusiasts. It isn’t known as Dinosaur Mountain. This is an old area, the Mediterranean covered big part of the south of Switzerland, I still find some little shells digging my garden.

I can't get over the 600 steps before you get to the elevator. I could never climb it. I'm glad they elected to keep it instead of dismantling it.
I love the picture of the ironwork. I'm sure the company that supplied the rivets was very happy with the contract.

A very interesting post. It's definitely the most sought after tourists attractions. I visited it and was mesmerized by it's magnificent and intricate design. Could not spend much time there and explore more as we were in Paris for a day and half only.

@JudyEv That's why I don't consider that I have been to France as I have not seen much there. It is still on my list to visit for a holiday.

Imagine the task of taking it down after all that work getting it up in the first place.

jest wow! ya don't get all that detail when ya jest see a pic 'f such, so thanks fer sharin' that beautiful ironwork! i'm certain they'd need to charge folks jest to pay fer the maintenance 'f such a monstrous structure. 'tis amazin' that somethin' built fer one occasion 'd be a major 'ttraction throughout the years, eh?
'tis 'lways hard to 'magine how these structures were made without all the modern gadgetry.
to answer yer query ~ yup!
