Quantity or Quality ?

Which would you choose for your end of living? Yesterday the doctor discussed with me some choices as to enjoying life more or just prolonging it. Mostly because I have no strength and my bones are deteriorating . After my hysterectomy back in ' 96, I was prescribed Premarin for estrogen replacement. Good for bones and helps with sweating etc. When I got breast cancer in 2000 I was immediately taken off which started a lot of other problems with bones etc. After all these years the doc thinks perhaps I want to take a chance of taking it again and feeling better. I said of course at this late date anything would be better then just laying around in this room sick and tired all the time. In fact I may not get the cancer back anyway. She is thinking perhaps all this sweating is also a hormone problem . Now if I could just stop the running nose situation I might not be up sweating here since 3 am. and get some sleep So would you choose live longer or better?

This is something I have even put in writing for my notary, in case I am so sick that I cannot decide, please stop my life, quality matters.

Today, medical science can keep your body alive long after your brain has ceased to effectively function and you have, in fact, passed into a persistent vegetative state that can last for months, even years. Would you choose to be kept alive in that condition or would you rather your doctor disconnect you and let you go?

That is a tough situation for you. It is difficult to handle with health issues. It is easy to say but suffering is difficult.

I hope going back on the medicine brings you some relief. My wife and I both have medical powers of attorney and a Do Not Resuscitate order in place should such a decision ever have to be made. As long as I'm conscious, my pain is manageable, and I can still write or at least dictate, she won't pull the plug.

Bonnie, this is a question only you can decide. But years ago when I realized that without the hormone therapy, I was having hot flashes every hour or more often. My doctor wanted me to get off the medicine, but even if it shortens my life by a couple of years, to me quality of life is more important than the number of years. And who's to say if it even really would shorten my life? Prayers for you this morning for healing and making the right decisions.

@andriaperry I'm pretty sure I will have hot flashes until I die. I guess that's why my OB-GYN lets me stay on a really low dose of estrogen.

@andriaperry I have never had any hormones and I am 77. I come from a very large family and none of us has had any hormones. I guess it is a heredity thing. Many of my aunts and uncles lived to be in their late 90's with a few over 100.

That is a tough question to answer. But I guess as many are saying in here quality life is best. If there is no hope of getting a good quality life it looks like there is no use to living anymore.

@bunnybon7 I am happy that you agreed with me. I just had some sad news from an aunt in the US who is 80 yrs old was diagnosed to have thyroid cancer. After further test on her were made it was again confirmed that it has spread through her lungs. Survival is slim at this point in time and was recommended to be sent on a hospice since no medical intervention can be done on her anymore since all intervention that can be done might further damage her frail body already. This exactly is what I meant of quality vs quantity......

i'm all 'bout quality myself. there'd be other hormone replacement therapies out there, hon. premarin 'tis made from pregnant mare urine. the conditions 'f which those mares're kept 'n what happens when they foal?? i'll let'cha do yer own research'n such.

oh I heard it comes from pregnant mares but didn't know about conditions. I just know I felt better. My oldest just told me about Estroven over the counter natural stuff. I think I will try that

@crazyhorseladycx that is true. I just called him to check about that and he said the oncologist said I should have neither . So looks like I have no choice and once you told me about the horrible things they do to these poor mares I would not feel right about it anyway. No wonder God is mad at most of us. treating his beloved creatures that way. It is inhuman

@bunnybon7 did they discuss possible alternatives 'bout what'cha could do to feel better? perhaps a visit with a nutritionist? light stretchin' 'n such which could be done'n a sittin' position to begin with? help rebuild yer bones? i 'gree, the greed 'f mankind 'n disregard fer all else makes me most sad.

I guess some how your body adjusted well to the hysterectomy . Most don't here in the USA. Not sure why. Some women are not prone to cancer and get away with taking replacement. I didn't but want to chance it again. For the hopes of a better stronger body and life.

@ramapo17 no idea. Every time they tell me something good I look forward to, I have to keep calling and asking. I think it is why I can't seem to ever get better here in Florida. Only had one good doctor kept up with things when I first got back for the first 8 or so months and wouldn't you know she retired. My bad luck

I am afraid with my background I would chose quality. I have witnessed too much pain, suffering and distress and I would not want to be like that. Life is for living and living the best way you can so you at least get some pleasure. All the best with your decision!

@garymarsh6 yes. I have already too much of laying around in pain. The Premarin would strengthen my bones, regulate this sweating hopefully, and in general help me feel better I think. But I have to look forward to what it caused before and be prepared for that. the cancer.

I would definitely choose to live better. My mom lived a few years longer as my dad didn't want to lose her. She lived the last 2 or 3 years in a wheel chair as she had a massive stroke plus Alzheimer's. That was so sad for her as she had no real way of life. My dad had to lift her in and out of bed with a crane. She had so many medical machines in the house and all she wanted to do was die. My dad was selfish but my sister and I had no say as she lived with dad. To this day I regret not trying to do more than I did to help her. After they both passed my sister and I had to clean out the house to sell it and while doing that I found a notebook that I gave her to draw in while I was there. She had written in her own handwriting, "please get me out of here". That broke my heart but I was to late. I would not want either of my children to have to go through that whole ordeal and I wouldn't want my kids to have to deal with me then either. Dad chose the longer time of life where I would not want that.

So sorry honey. That's a terrible thing to go through. My daughter knows I would not want to suffer and the reason for me getting back on Premarin is to make me feel better even if it shortens my life.

I could relate to your story too... I lost my mom to cancer and no matter how hard we try to make her well it would always go back to her condition. There came a time that she did not respond to the medicines she was taken and our doctor said the grim verdict that her situation will worsen as time goes by. My mom just waited for my sister to arrive before she finally bade farewell to us. It was a sad moment but the quality of life that we thought she deserves were not there anymore so we have to give her up to fate else machines would make her live longer but she will never enjoy the life that she will be having.

@bunnybon7 We all have to do what we think is right and what will make us feel better. Life is so complicated at times. Luckily now a days we have the computer to write to other people to talk to when we need someone. Sometimes we cannot speak to our families because they would get emotional to. I wish I could help you with the answer or even to help make the pain go away. Just remember you have so many friends here that are ready to help in any way we can, even if it is just a few words or prayers.
