I learned long ago, don't put people on a pedestal, because they are bound to fall. There is a former friend of mine, he's a talented writer & I respect him in that regard, but on a personal level, he's kind of a jerk (hence one reason we are former friends.)
I won't go into further details of our falling out, it's not really necessary. I forgave him for his jerkiness, but that doesn't really mean I want him in my life, we're better off staying as we are.

I have had to break off a very close relationship. Her drinking and abusiveness towards me and my wife just got to a point I could no longer handle it. One day, we just walked away. It was very hard but we needed to protect ourselves. I miss the friendship but will not go back.

I will admit that the former friend I mention, there may actually be times I miss him, but given the opportunity to have him back in my life, I'd take a hard pass for my own mental & emotional health.

I totally understand that. I don't really have any close friends anymore, some people were toxic and others just had life get in the way. It is best to just avoid toxic friends and find those who really mean something.

I don't miss friends who are comfort friends too. It's their loss, not mine..especially for causing grievous hurt to people who matter to me from the day they were born..

I’ve been in similar circumstances so I understand!
