Pretty in Pink

A few years back I had some Dianthus (pinks) in the garden and a couple of years ago I took some cuttings and put them in a large urn. Last year they looked a picture and smelled gorgeous whenever I went down to the bottom of the garden but this year they've been an absolute picture. My main problem with them is that they're just too good. I've got masses of flowers but, in order to keep a steady flow of new buds, it's necessary to dead head them every day which can take a bit of time. The picture above shows some of them just before I got out the secateurs to get rid of the dead ones but my only regret in sharing this picture with you is that you can't actually smell them. I stand at the bottom of the garden when it's just getting dusk and all I can smell is a clove, slightly aniseed sweetness. I've taken some more cuttings this year which seem to have taken but Adam's concerned that I'm not going to have enough flower bed to plant them in. My answer is that you can never have enough smelly flowers in your garden! Does anyone else agree?
