You Will Not Always Get It Right

I talk a lot about the value of investing, and the value of the stock market in general. And for the most part I do very well with this. But even a seasoned investor such as myself is invariably not going to get it right all of the time. We all make mistakes. We all make miscalculations. It's just the nature of the beast. This post is more to illustrate that even when the losses are high, you have to keep at it, and never be discouraged by the fact that you may have lost significant money. You have to only make sure you learn by your mistakes. Here are some really bad investments I made and the amounts I lost: VelaTel, $17,114.56 Drinks Americas, $6,119.00 HQSM, $4,705.64 Pulse Beverage, $2,303.14 That alone is $30,242.34 literally down the drain. And of course there were other bad calls through the years which I have not mentioned. Again, the point here is that YES. The stock market can be scary. People don't want to lose money. YES. But, you have to stay in the game nonetheless because while these losses seem terrible and significant, my gains have far surpassed this over the years. So long as you get it right most of the time, and keep learning what to do and what not to do, you ultimately wind up coming out ahead. The stock market is not something to fear. It is something to learn and know. It's only gambling if you do not know what you are doing.

@porwest that might be your experience. But for me stock market is a big No. I very well understood your post in the very beginning itself.

@amitkokiladitya The only reason the stock market is a big no for a lot of people is because they don't learn from their mistakes and then just get scared of it. There is sooo much money out there for people to make and enjoy and so many people just leave it on the table, and it just pains me.

Then you missed the whole point of this post unfortunately. As I said, "Again, the point here is that YES. The stock market can be scary. People don't want to lose money. YES. But, you have to stay in the game nonetheless because while these losses seem terrible and significant, my gains have far surpassed this over the years. So long as you get it right most of the time, and keep learning what to do and what not to do, you ultimately wind up coming out ahead." I am trying to help people to not be so afraid to lose a little bit, but to take the time to learn and grow. If all anyone does is put money into a savings account, they will never get ahead.

@amadeo Like I said, so long as you feel they have been doing right by you over the years, no harm, no foul.

I never liked working with advisors. I always did better on my own, but that's just me. But so long as you are still invested and happy with the results, who am I to say anything about that?

I am invested in funds. I let the experts select the stocks in them.

I used to enjoy "playing the market". Now that I'm retired I put my money into a good interest-earning annuity.

As we get older, and yes, after we retire, it becomes more and more important to protect the principal, so putting it into a safer high yielding environment is essential. I am pretty knowledgeable about the markets though, so I am not sure I would ever be completely out of the markets even into retirement. Too much income to be made especially from options contracts I sell.
