Where to Next?

My husband and I have been together for some 27 years, married for 22 next month. It took me up until 7 years ago to get him to go on a real vacation with me. That was our Hawaiian cruise. Last December we went to Cuba. It was fabulous and the cheapest vacation you can find ($1500 all inclusive). So now that we have a bit of money (inheritance money) and hubby is willing to go away again, we have a bit of a dilemma. We really loved Cuba, especially the price. We loved having the beach right there every day, something you don't have on a cruise ship. We would love to go back to Cuba. Some other Canadians we met there were on their 10th trip there and I know others who have been several times. But my daughter says, "Why wouldn't you go some place else? Some place you haven't been?" Ha! I haven't been pretty much everywhere. If we were to use my daughter's work at an airlines and fly where they go at a fraction of the price, we would be dealing with hefty costs at all inclusive resorts where ever we go. Now, yeah, I have some money and will be getting more but I don't want to spend it all at once... plus I'm pretty sure we're going to need a new car soon. So what should we do, splurge on an expensive resort? Or stick to the popular and cheaper option of Cuba? Picture is from our trip to Cuba last December.

Go back to Cuba if you liked and do not listen to your daughter. We tried many different places and 85% of the time we were deceived.

I think it's going to come down to whether we will be content to just sit on a beach for a week or whether we want to go on any excursions. There aren't many in Cuba. And there's other stuff we have to spend money on as well so we shall see.

@LadyDuck A couple of downfalls with Cuba is a) the strict military presence. You really can't leave the island without going through a police check point where visas are checked. b) some locations have contracts with Sunwing Airlines, Cuba is one of them. It's not the best airlines. The plans are old and very cramped. I would prefer to fly with the airlines my daughter works for and get a few perks when she tells them her parents are on board.

@patgalca I preferred to go back to places we liked, once there visiting the local tourist offices we always found new things to see.

Jamaica is one of the places me and my husband want to go. They have several different resorts and it looks like fun not a typical places that you hear people going all of the time but I would love to go.

It has been considered except that my husband went there when he was a partying bachelor.

@ShyBear88 I wanted to go to England, Ireland and maybe Scotland. My background is English and Irish. The only thing that has kind of stopped me from making those trips is my health. I have chronic pain and chronic fatigue which I do NOT experience when I am in the tropics. If I am going on a vacation I want to feel good. I feel fantastic when I am in the salty, dry heat.

@patgalca okay, we thought about Hawaii and Germany as places to go when our kids are older. I want to go to Japan and see the Cherry blossoms,

The only vacations I've been on were to visit people, mostly relatives when I lived in Vancouver. I don't have any advice for you. I don't know how to vacation, and I can think of better things to spend money on.

I don't want to spend all my money because this time I'm keeping it for myself so the trip is my treat. Cheaper is better especially since we loved it there.

@BarBaraPrz With the plans we currently have for a few changes in this house, I will probably go with the cheaper trip.

Having all your meals included is better than having to pay for each meal and find yourself counting pennies.

I'm a frugal gal, so I'd say stick with Cuba. You loved it and it didn't cost an arm and a leg.

It is in my daughter's hands right now as she is looking around and trying to get the best deals. My husband doesn't mind going back to Cuba. I'm just not a fan of some of the restrictions.

@patgalca Your daughter might find an even better deal. My son and his wife are going to Alaska for two weeks. they will be cruising up the coast.

Thank you. I'm in a conundrum right now when it comes to my money. I'm afraid I will be a little careless as there are so many things I want. We just finished redecorating our family room. I am toying with the idea of a new stand for our television. It's about $450, and since I just leased myself a car for 4 years, I'm holding back.

@patgalca Wow, that is a lot. I hate when I have to spend right after the other on things that I need or have to replace.

I would say go back to Cuba. Just don't go to the Dominican Republic right now. Too many tourists dying there.

Oh no! No one is talking about the Dominican. Not the place to go.
