Shocking what happened to this man!

A young man in the UK got contact lens. He was never warned of the danger of showering with his contact lenses in. A rare infection can come if you shower with them on, and he was one of those rare individuals who got the infection.
He got excruciating pain in his right eye and became blinded in his right eye. He has already had two surgeries on his eye and is scheduled to have a cornea transplant very soon. The cornea transplant should hopefully restore his sight.
He said that if the transplant is successful, he will never wear contact lenses again, only glasses. He said in the time of the infection and surgeries, he had gone from being very active physically to not wanting to do anything.
My husband wears contacts. When I read this, I immediately asked him if he wears contacts when he showers and he says yes. He had been warned from his optometrist but it was said that it is very rare.
One thing that will prevent something like this to happen is keeping your contact lenses extremely clean. It is scary there is that chance for a blinding infection.
I have never and would never wear contacts. I only wear my reading glasses to read , drive and watch TV.
A U.K. man experienced “excruciating pain“ and went blind in his right eye after showering in his contacts, which caused a parasite to burrow under the lens and into his eye, reports said.

I agree, I would never want to put anything in my eye.

@LeaPea2417 When I was in fourth grade, maybe fifth, I was coming back to school from lunch and found a football coming at me and hit me in the eye with the pointed end. It broke my glasses and took the rest of the day with students going out to help me find the lens on the snow-encrusted playground. It was finally found but I haven't been able to do anything since that would affect my eyes.

I had never heard about this! I have never worn contacts, as my eyes are too dry, but I don't mind glasses. The exception to this is when I play softball. I can't wear glasses and play at the quality level I demand of myself.

@LeaPea2417 They make me look a bit nerdy, which means I don't have to deal with models and actresses beating down my door to visit me.

I agree, they should always mention it to patients.

@LeaPea2417 Look how much they mention every possible problem in the medications instructions, why not to warn something like this?

My sister also wears contacts. I need to share the article with her.

@LeaPea2417 My friend scratched her corneas by sleeping with her contacts and suffered for ages.

me either. Just the way they are put inside your eye looks scary. With my luck, I would not be able to put them in right and then I would also get that infection.

I bet that not keeping them clean will lead to an infection as well. I don’t wear contacts but 2 of my kids do and other than pink eye they have never had a problem

I agree. My Father has worn glasses most of his life and said he would never put a contact on his eye.

Yes, that is another thing people who wear them are not supposed to do, sleep in them. I agree they are more trouble than they are worth.

That's terrible. I wore hard contacts for a few years. Had to give them up because my left eye was shaped funny; and the contacts constantly bothered me. They didn't have soft contacts back then.

Thank goodness my husband and sister wear soft ones, I do remember hearing about hard ones being more problematic.

I agree, just the thought of what the guy went through, makes me cringe.
