Barry is Now Hurricane Barry

Within the last hour, Barry was upgraded to a Category 1 hurricane and is now Hurricane Barry. He is still lurking off the coast of Louisiana and hasn't made landfall yet. We are doing well here. It has been raining on and off, but nothing heavy yet. My daughter in Erwinville is without power already. She is closer to the main projected path of the storm once it comes inland. I haven't heard from my daughter in Lafayette, LA this morning. She is just north of Morgan City, LA where the storm will be coming ashore. My other daughter is in Baton Rouge and she doesn't have wi-fi. She was okay last night so hoping they stay high and dry. Barry should be making landfall soon. Photo: Pixaby, public domain

It's only a Cat. 1 but the rainfall it will bring will cause widespread flooding from local rivers.

@kareng Even a tropical storm can cause a lot of damage. Only a cat 1 does not mean it can not be dangerous.

@akalinus Our danger comes from the flooding and all the rain after the storm. Of course, we will have trees and lines down and that is happening now. I have lived in LA all my life so I have been through many, including Camille in the '60s.

Praying that all are safe from the storm, especially your daughters and their families. We have been getting intermittent heavy rain and wind from it.

Barry looked much worse than a tropical storm. I hope you and your daughter remain safe and sound. Prayers for you all.

@DianneN We did good. Just a day's worth of yardwork picking up sticks and limbs. House in LA spared from flooding so far. Rivers are still up there and it all trickles back down here, so right now a waiting game.

It made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane. It is a big storm. It is calm here right now but we will have the brunt of it for our area tonight and tomorrow.

Stay safe! I wished it would have not been upgraded. We are getting hard downpour all the way up there!

Yep, the Eastside always gets hit the hardest with rain from hurricanes. Hope those go away for you soon as it moves north.

@kareng Good that you are safe, hope the storm hurries out of there and doesn't dump to much rain on you.

We will be staying home here in MS and off the roads. Never understood why some have to get out and go look when you can see it all and more on television.

@bunnybon7 Might as well get used to them if you are staying in Florida. They are very common there too.

@kareng I did not. I grew up in Ohio where there is nothing like hurricanes. seems these things follow where I am too when one comes.

For the most part, yes, but still some along the coast without power still. We came through fine. I still haven't picked up all the limbs blown down from the store yet.

I'm glad Barry is not a high-powered storm as far as wind is concerned, but the more pressing concern here will be the onslaught of rain in an already saturated area. I really hope the flooding doesn't end up being as bad as they are predicting it could possibly be. Hope you and all your family stays safe!

That is the concern here also. The Mississippi River is already at flood stage in Baton Rouge, as well as other local rivers. Hoping we don't get as much rain as they think we will. Looks like you guys will be spared from outer bands even as it moves north.

@moffittjc Yes, it has been at flood stage for about two months or more in Baton Rouge.

@kareng Keep your fingers crossed that everything works as designed and keeps the flood waters contained to where they need to be. Is the river as high up near Baton Rouge as it is down in New Orleans?

I was looking at the path and thinking Hot Springs looks like it may get hit. Stay safe. The tornadoes these storms produce are scary. We have an issue with flooding here.

Hope everything would be safe there. Late this afternoon, our weather bureau announced that a tropical depression has developed. It will be named soon.

@Nakitakona Not really, wishing you luck means that it misses you, is not as harsh as expected, etc. Stay safe my friend.

@kareng I think it's unwise to wish us a good luck when we're in trouble. Anyway thanks.

We are all good. Now we just have to watch the rivers cresting. All the added rain and more coming down from the north will have river levels going up again.
