Captain Phillips - A Movie Review

This is a true story. The movie was released in 2013 and is rated PG-13. It received 6 Academy Award nominations. March 23, 2009 - Captain Richard Phillips (played by Tom Hanks) kisses his wife goodbye at the airport. On the coast of Somalia the mercenaries are angry with the villagers because they have not provided them with money for their boss. Hufan, the local village boss, tells Muse and Asad to pick three men each and get their skiffs ready. The men load up their skiffs with long ladders, water and fuel. The Port of Salalah in Oman - Captain Phillips arrives and takes command of the MV Maersk Alabama, a commercial container ship. They are to sail through the Gulf of Aden and around the Horn of Africa to Mombasa, Kenya. They are carrying 2,500 tons of commercial cargo, 166 tons of fresh water, 200 tons of food and 250 tons of fuel. Phillips orders the First Mate, Murphy, to make sure that all doors and hatches are locked and secured, even when in port. Hufan checks his radar and notices a large group of ships...one is separated from the rest. They will target the Maersk Alabama. Captain Phillips orders an emergency drill so that the crew will be prepared for any event. After starting the first drill, Phillips notices two small blips on the radar screen. I won't give you any spoilers. Suffice to say that this is a very good movie. It's full of suspense, action and excellent acting by Tom Hanks. It is very good in providing a believable recreation of a pirate attack. I highly recommend it. Photo Credit: Pixabay
