I went in for a surgical op left a note on myself for the doc "Please doctor take care while poking in here if it looks like I'm dying, please stop". When the op was all over and done found a note from the doc on my tum "I've saved your life but I've lost my knife, where the heck do you think it has gone?"

It's been a long time since I read a poem of yours. Congrats, you haven't lost it! You've used an eye rhyme, just like the Bard occasionally did.

Very good rhyme, those kind of accidents are increasing. I hope the doctors do not look at their facebook page using their phone while performing surgery.

@jaboUK It's crazy to think that could ever happen . . . but even surgeons make mistakes (but hopefully this is not too common!). Hope you are doing well!

Thanks SmilePie - I took a bit of a break Yes, I was inspired to write this by a news article I read in which a swab had been left inside a woman.

I have read many a time that the doctors left stuff inside the patients while they performed operations. The patients really suffered and had to have second operations.

Yes, I've read about this sort of thing happening. So though I've made a joke out of it, it's based in fact.

Hi Julia. This was inspired by me reading about a swab (not a knife!) being left inside someone after an operation. So though it's fiction it has it's roots in fact

Poetic licence Gary - I haven't really had an op. Did you ever come across anything like this during your working life? I wrote this after I read about a swab being left in someone's insides after an op.

That's brilliant! I've often thought that if I had to have a limb amputated, I would write (or get a friend to write), with an indelible marker, NOT THIS ONE! on the opposite limb, just in case!

HAHA, a doc with a sense of humor...love it!!! Interesting, that while I was in the hospital most of the day on Monday visiting friend..the floor medical staff were all supremely cheery, but the doctors, and technicians behind the scenes on the computer all had serious looks on their face. I am sure it is a weighty job!

If I were that patient I'd demand an xray It's sad to think those kinds of things actually happen but I'll bet the surgeon would never admit to it.
