Home again and drying off

We’ve just spent four nights in our caravan attending a horse endurance riding competition. The weather was foul on the Friday when the horses were all checked out by veterinarians. I was ‘pencilling’ meaning writing the scores in the competitors’ books. Halfway through the vetting it started to rain and, as there was nowhere to shelter out of it, my shower-proof coat quickly became soaked.
Luckily Saturday was fine and sunny in the morning as you can see from the collage. Late in the afternoon, the weather again turned wet and windy.
From a distance, I thought this was a parent and child coming into view but the smaller grey pony was ridden by a lady who would have been in her early 60s.
The top photo gives an idea of the lovely area where the ride was held. After riding through farmland, the riders entered the State forest and followed various tracks before coming back to camp. Photos are mine – for a change.

That sounds like it must have been good except for the weather.

@crazyhorseladycx What a shame you were never able to come to Australia. You would love riding through out bush but I'm sure there are lovely places to ride there too.

Pretty place to ride. I prefer the smaller sized horses also.

@JudyEv Our tallest right now of 4 is right at the line. She is 14.2 My favorite was about 13.2 hands and would go all day with ease.

@wolfgirl569 Mine was 14.1. The ponies are mostly really tough and don't have much trouble keeping up with the bigger horses.

Sounds like a great time. We were at the horse races last night, although we only stuck around for 4 out of the 7 scheduled races. We'd had a pretty long day and it was getting kind of late, and it WAS pretty hot out still at 9pm, so we just called it a night and went home.

Was your shower proof coat not up to the task?

Not at all! It was soaked within minutes. I don't often have to be out in such rain but I said I'd pencil for the vets so that's what I did. I'd hide the book in my pocket then rush under a canvas awning to fill it in. Eventually my pocket was making the books wet. I was really silly not to take a second coat but I'm not sure my other one is much better. I'll look at buying something really rainproof but if we're out in the field taking photos I don't need it. Maybe I can pick up a cheap one somewhere.

Oh that feeling when every soaked is changed into something fresh after a warm bath

We really have to expect bad weather at this time of year.
