Stolen Roosters

My dad is very passionate about roosters. He spends a lot of his time and money taking care of these roosters which he enters in Derbies and gets money back from. We have this joke that those roosters are our youngest sibling considering how my dad takes care of them. Today we discovered 4 of his babies got stolen in the wee hours of the morning. Our little puppy tried to warn us and was barking around 1 AM in the morning but since he also barks at neighbouring dogs and cat he was ignored. So my dad lost 12,000 worth of roosters. We tried to check the CCTV footage but the perpetrators seem to be aware of their placements so we found none. Now we are worrying they are going to be regular thieves since they already succeeded once and there is still more roosters in the yard.

Yeah this is the first theft incidence in our home. We have it open. I guess dad was too trusting. Now this incidence convinced him to finally build a tall fence.

@1hopefulman True. Gone are the days when you can just leave your house open to all. Gone are the days when people looks out for each other.

Are you sure it was a human thief and not an animal thief? We have foxes and coyotes here that regular attack and kill hens, chickens and roosters. Even raccoons will eat chickens.

It’s a human thief. Firstly, there where no traces of struggle. Also there have always been neighbouring animals coming in like neighbours dog coming in but they never touched the chicken. Also if it was an animal thief I doubt it will stop with only 4. And lastly we don’t really have coyotes and racoons here. Although I’ve heard of feral dog attacks in another town before. But they ate like witches and the scene was bloody.

@moffittjc I am doubting it. Our neighbour had been robbed chicken too. Multiple if times.

I hope its not some kind of reptiles near farm areas. Sometimes they are eaten by them

I don’t think it is. It’s too clean to appear as an animal attack. Plus our dog was barking so if it was a reptile our little dog could’ve been eaten too.

Your dad should put more CCTV for security. Or place the roosters on a secured place.

The CCTV proved to be useless. He is hiring another rooster handler to keep the roosters secured.

That is a great shame. Perhaps you could swivel the cameras a bit until you can build a fence.

My dad was planning to build just a low fence because he said fences are just the deterrence and respect is the reason why people don’t steal. But now I guess he got a reality check.

Oh what a shame to those thieves, even roosters will steal. Gosh, why they don't try to work hard so that they can have their own money and not stealing others property or what.

Exactly and it seems like they have made this their modus. We found out today that some chicken breeders have recurrent incidents of theft. It looks like an organised crime. They probably operate in groups.

@raveeen Yeah we think the one who stole was someone we personally know. It went too smoothly to begin with.

@flapiz Yea and maybe they know or memorized your place because they really know what to do and not to do. I guess..?

It isn’t insured. Yeah I feel really sorry for him. It’s not even the money issue. It’s the time he spent with them.

Exactly they don’t even consider the labour and effort of others. If they want roosters they could start from scratch too. My dad spends sleepless nights treating his chickens when they get sick. He even regularly bathes them. And then this people just come and reap what he’s sown.
