Food sources, who gets fed

Large round hay bales

I just really enjoy the wild life around. Again this is pictures of the large bales of hay across from me. They are everywhere in the local fields. While the swather was running, I noticed hawks and crows and other large birds patrolling the hay. I am sure they were eating. Every morning I see a feral black cat making a patrol up the road. Sometimes in the field, sometimes not. One day I could tell by the way he held his head high that he was carrying something in his mouth. Hubby says yesterday in another field, while he was going to work he noticed a mamma coyote and three cubs. She was showing them to dig at the base of the bales. I am sure they were seeking rodents that have come to feast on the seeds and grain in the bales, and sheltering. Let's not forget those rodents, mice, for sure, and rabbits have been a little more plentiful. The snakes come to feast on the rodents. All kinds of birds are out there, too. Some perch on the bales and watch, some gather seeds and insects. Big ones eat mice and such. A male goldfinch just had a huge snack on one of the sunflowers, I guess it has ripened seeds. What a gorgeous site he was. He also appreciated a drink in the birdbath. While the wild flowers and not so wild flowers are blooming I am seeing butterflies, but also many types of bees. Little tiny "sweat bees", honey bees, and larger carpenter bees. I have seen two Japanese beetles in my yard. Grasshoppers eat the leaves of my crops. Spiders eat them all. I am guessing we all get fed. I put a cucumber I grew in my salad last night.

That's the food chain for ya! Our landscape is very different here in Connecticut. We have woods here with many wild animals both large and small. My job is to keep an eye on Doodles the cat when he takes his many walks outside.

Yes, I would think that would be necessary so he did not end up being someone's snack.

@crazyhorseladycx But it is what I see when I look up from the computer or sit out front with coffee and such. It is better than television.

It's a whole 'nother world out there, isn't it? So much that we miss. I can imagine you really enjoy watching life go on in the field.

Animals, in spite of feeding on one another, are sometimes nicer than people.

That is the circle of life at it's best. Each feeds on the lower level.

This one had a little bit of bitterness cause it grew when we were not getting rain and I was gone and could not water. It was not too bad and I am sure the next one will be delicious.

Sounds so very breathtaking with lots of goings on of wildlife to enjoy! Locally we got birds that fly by, once in while feral cat going through the neighborhood or a mongoose peering out of the bushes and dog barking on Oahu. When I caught the bus and went bus riding to the rural areas of North Shore, I saw horses in the grassy fields.
